●米軍、ガルデズで迫撃砲攻撃を受ける

無名の攻撃者が月曜日に数基の迫撃砲による攻撃を開始した。
爆弾はアフガニスタン東部での作戦に向かっていた米部隊の近くで爆発した。
信頼できる筋によれば、米軍の護送隊は（明らかに反ムジャヒディン作戦の為に）ガルデズの都市から2、3キロメートル離れたところを進んでいるところを攻撃された。
迫撃砲の他に自動小銃と手榴弾による攻撃もあった。
ブライアン・ヒルフェルティー少佐（アメリカ軍のスポークスマン）は、月曜日にガルデズ（首都カブールからおよそ60マイル南方）の米軍に数百ヤードの距離から砲撃があったと話した。
ヒルフェルティーはアメリカ軍が応戦したか否かに言及することを拒否した。
しかし、部隊が「その付近に出て行った…そして、そこの人々（一般市民）と遭遇した。我々は調査し続けている、しかし、それが彼等が我々を攻撃していることを意味するならば、この国で話すことは難しい！」と、語った。
通常通り、ヒルフェルティーはこの攻撃による米軍の犠牲者はないと言ったが、1ユニットの兵士が攻撃者の捜索に出たが何も見つけられなかったと話した。
地元住民は「迫撃砲爆弾の爆発は都市の外でも聞こえた程大きかった。犠牲者無しという報告は馬鹿げている」と、話した。

U.S. Troops Come Under Heavy Mortar Bomb Fire Outside Gardez

KABUL (Islam News):
Unknown attackers launched several mortar rounds which exploded near U.S. troops that were heading for an operation in eastern Afghanistan on Monday.
According to reliable sources, a convoy of U.S. troops had been travelling a few kilometres away from the city of Gardez, apparently for an anti-Mujahideen operation.
The mortar bomb attack was accompanied with automatic gun fire and grenades.
Maj. Bryan Hilferty, a U.S. Military Spokesman said the shells were fired Monday several hundred yards from U.S. forces in Gardez, about 60 miles south of the capital, Kabul.
Hilferty declined to say whether U.S. forces had returned fire, but said the troops went "out in that vicinity ... and had an encounter with people there." and that "We are continuing to investigate but it's hard to tell in this country if that means they're attacking us!"
Hilferty, as usual, denied that the U.S. troops suffered any casualties from this attack, but said that a unit of soldiers had gone in search of the attackers, but found nothing.
Local Afghan residents said that the mortar bomb explosions were so loud that they could even be heard outside the city and the report of no casualties was 'laughable'.
