Four U.S. soldiers killed by roadside bomb west of Baghdad

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - A roadside bomb killed four U.S. soldiers west of Baghdad, the military reported Wednesday, raising the number of U.S. troops killed this month to 62.

The blast from the improvised explosive struck the soldiers' vehicle at about 6:50 a.m. Tuesday morning, the military said in a brief statement. No other details of the attack were given and soldiers' names were being withheld pending notification of their families.

The death toll in October is on a pace that, if it continues, would make the month the worst for coalition forces since January 2005, when 127 service members died.

At least 2,774 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.
