In Fallujah: Weekend Battles Raged; US Forces Pinned Down In The North
Dec 06, 2004
By Omar Al-Faris, JUS
The American siege of Fallujah is beginning to show similarities to its first siege of the city in April, when occupation forces were forced to give up the fight even after Fallujah has been leveled to the ground in many areas. According to Mafkarat al-Islam reports received over the weekend, US forces are increasingly finding themselves encircled and under attack by Mujahideen outside the city.
Over the past few days the Mujahideen has succeeded in closing all routes to the nearest American base in al-Habbaniyah, including the main highway and all dirt roads and paths through fields that are effectively preventing the Americans from evacuating any military equipment from the area.
Previously, the Mujahideen had left routes open in order to encourage the Americansユ retreat, allowing them to pull about half of their forces out of the city area. Mujahideen then cut off the access to transit routes, cutting off supplies of fuel and food to the Americans in city and preventing any further withdrawal of US troops from the city. After fierce fighting on Saturday in the south, the intensity of fighting there has now as US forces in the northern part of the city come under increasing attack.
In addition to the attacks mounted by the Mujahideen on US forces outside Fallujah, the Americans within the city were the targets of continuous ambushes, mortar fire and rocket attacks throughout the weekend.
The concentration of US troops east of Fallujah has decreased by 25 percent, with many of the troops from there having been sent to the north of the city.
More than 35 operations were carried out inside Fallujah on Sunday alone, including mines blasted at Allawi メnational guardモ forces and ambushes and mortar and rockets attacks against US forces.
Fierce Fighting Reported Saturday
On Saturday, fierce fighting broke out in several parts of Fallujah, in particular in the south of the city. Violent battles raged to the south of the neighborhoods of ash-Shuhadaユ and al-Jubayl in the south of Fallujah from 11am until 12 noon local time, with US aircraft bombing Mujahideen positions. US forces also advanced in the east of the city, but then were thrown back to their previous positions.
Fierce fighting also erupted at dawn Saturday after Mujahideen broke through into the ash-Shurtah neighborhood. Battles broke out with US forces in the al-Hadrah area and in the al-Jaghifi neighborhood, lasting for about 90 minutes.
There was heavy fighting in the al-Jawlan neighborhood as well in the northwest of city, where the Mujahideen beat US forces back to their former positions half a kilometer away from al-Jawlan.
Mujahideen fired six Grad and two Tariq rockets at US troop concentrations in the as-Sakani area northeast of Fallujah, the at-Tariq camp and the area east of the city in a bombardment that began early Saturday morning at 10am, was renewed at 1pm, and then again at about 5pm.
Mujahideen Downs Another US Chinook
At 1:30pm Saturday, fighters in ヤAmiriyat as-Saqlawiyah fired a Strela rocket at a US Chinook helicopter that was said to be loaded with American troops and was being escorted by a smaller Black Hawk helicopter gunship. The Strela hit the Chinook and brought it crashing down into the area of Project 102, east of ヤAmiriyat as-Saqlawiyah. The fighters in the ヤAmiriyah area have succeeded in bringing down a large number of US helicopters, and as the result, this region has been dubbed the メhelicopter graveyardモ. Casualty reports have not yet been received.
Mujahideen Thwart US Withdrawal Sunday
Early on Sunday morning, American forces attempted to evacuate a troop unit to al-Habbaniyah but failed, even with the assistance of supporting air power. Mujahideen blocked the exit of the column made up of 35 military vehicles and three vehicles they destroyed were witnesses personally by the Mafkarat al-Islam correspondent in the area. After encountering that obstruction, the American column fell back to the city as US aircraft began bombing that section of Fallujah. At of this filing, the US column remains trapped in the area.
Also Sunday, in the al-Azraqiyah area west of Fallujah, Mujahideen bombed US troops in the agricultural area north of Fallujah, the as-Sakani neighborhood, and the area around the railroad station with at least 15 Grad rockets around sunset. Hits were very accurate, suggesting that the fighters were able to infiltrate US positions to get precise bearings of targets in advance.
Mujahideen also bombarded large US troop concentrations near the electric power station in the as-Sakani neighborhood Sunday morning with five Grad rockets. The rockets hit their targets, sending thick smoke rising into the air. Fighters also fired three rockets from the south at US troop concentrations located in eastern Fallujah. The extent of the damage incurred is unknown.
Hard Weekend Fighting Ends With US Forces Driven Back
Fierce fighting raged in the ash-Shuhadaユ and al-Jubayl neighborhoods of southern Fallujah Sunday morning, but finally US forces were forced to fall back to behind the highway east of the city.
According to Mafkarat al-Islam the fighting broke out at about 8:15am Sunday and lasted until 9:30am. US units came from the east of the city and drove towards the south, but Mujahideen forces stood up to them. Fire was exchanged and the US troops, despite the air support they enjoyed, were unable to advance any further. The Mujahideen, in fact, forced them to withdraw to beyond the east of Fallujah. US forces east of the city were also observed falling back to behind the highway after coming under intermittent Mujahideen fire. Mujahideen fire was noticeable for its accuracy in hitting US vehicles.
Mujahideen fighters in groups of four to eight men launched surprise attacks on the US troops in the areas of the city where the Mujahideen is not in control, helping to force the Americans to withdraw to the relative safety they enjoy behind the highway.
US Forces Plan Their Extraction
Inside sources report that US forces, acting through intermediaries, have asked the civil defense forces and the Fallujah police to prepare to return to the city in the near future to provide メsecurity and protectionモ for the city and other tasks. The Fallujah civil defense and police are all residents of the city who were chosen for those jobs on the basis of the stipulations laid down by the cityユs residents when negotiating the withdrawal of US forces in April. As was the case with the first siege, the US forces are now endeavoring to save face and withdraw from the city after being able to penetrate only 40% before pinned down in the north. Sources say that the Americans through intermediaries have asked for talks with leaders if the two organizations.
It is likely that the Americans will shortly be announcing that they had succeeded in clearing the city of what they call メinsurgentsモ and had handed control of the city over to the police and civil defense forces who would then enter the city and take up their security roles. This is how the Americans extricated themselves from the first siege in April, when they covered their defeat on the battlefield by allowing local residents to join police and civil defense forces, rather than accept the Allawi troops or police recruited by the Americans to assert control over the city. By returning to this arrangement, the Americans are in effect admitting their defeat while presenting an entirely different image to the public.
