First US Withdrawals From Fallujah Reported: Mujahideen Retake The Old City
Nov 28, 2004
By Omar al-Faris, JUS and Muhammad Abu Nasr, Free Arab Voice
Last evening, after US forces outside Fallujah took heavy rocket fire from the Lions of Fallujah, occupation forces pulled their units that were surrounding the western sector of the city back in the direction of the US base at al-Habbaniyah.
In a dispatch posted at 9pm Mecca time, Friday night, Mafkarat al-Islamユs correspondent reported that US forces outside Fallujah were subjected to heavy Mujahideen bombardments, firing Grad and Tariq rockets that resulted in their withdrawal from the area. JUS also received information from sources close to the Mujahideen that US forces were indeed pulling back at al-Habbaniyah
This is the first report of a US retreat from any of the sectors of the occupation lines that ring Fallujah since the siege began some weeks ago. US forces also withdrew from check points on the old bridge and the new bridge west of the city. The US command points to the north of the city also retreated under heavy fire according to Mafkarat al-Islamユs correspondent.
These developments show a weakening of the US forces surrounding Fallujah and their utter failure to dislodge the resistance. In fact, in the last three days, the Mujahideen are reported to have regained their previous strength levels and expanded the areas of the city under their control. As of the time of this filing, Mujahideen control over 65% percent of Fallujah.
The limitation of US forces has become widely apparent over the past few days as Mujahideen outside the city were able to break through US lines on three occasions; once by swimming the river and twice through what was referred to as the strongly fortified northwestern part of the city.
Mafkarat al-Islam reports that the Mujahideen have managed to cut all US supply lines on all land routes that support the US lines around the city. Our sources tell us that this was part of the initial strategy which JUS reported when the US invasion began. Concurrently, US forces have been drawn into a pre-planned war of attrition, forcing the Americans into close guerilla combat, something US forces are not well trained in nor are proficiant at. The Mujahideenユs battle plan in this invasion mirrors that of the first siege of the city in April.
For the past week, no major fighting has broken out except under cover of darkness, usually dissipating after sunrise. Even US aerial attacks on the city have grown less intense than they were at the start of the American offensive. US forces experienced a major setback when Mujahideen struck them in the al-Bu ヤIrrin gardens area with unconventional rockets. These resulted in serious US losses, as JUS and other uncensored press reported, which was evidenced by the fact that four giant Chinook helicopters were seen transporting the dead and wounded away.
Another development has been the withdrawal of US snipers from the streets overlooking the Euphrates Rive and the city is now exposed from the west according to Mafkarat al-Islam who reported the first US withdrawal from Fallujah during the first siege of the city last April. At that time, Mafkarat al-Islamユs reports were met with disbelief and condemnation as other media simply echoed official US claims of nonstop メvictoryモ and メadvanceモ however they were ultimately proven correct.
On Saturday, JUS received reports from both Mafkarat al-Islamユs and our own sources that, while the information is slightly different, both conclude that US forces has withdrawn in some areas.
Mujahideen Retake the Old City
Meanwhile, Fallujah Mujahideen broke through US lines at noon Friday and have seized control of the Old City in central Fallujah. Fierce fighting erupted after the Resistance broke through at about 1pm Friday, and continued violently until about 4pm. US forces unleashed mortar rounds on the Resistance and US aircraft fired rockets and container bombs loaded with cluster bombs according to reports in from Mafkarat al-Islam. Fridayユs breakthrough was the fourth major breakthrough of US lines scored in and around the city during the present siege. There was no direct ground combat between Mujahideen and the US invaders in the course of the attack, meaning that the Mujahideen had indeed seized complete control of the area. The US relied on airstrikes and mortars alone to defend their positions Friday as it appears that no ground forces were present in that part of the city and when the Mujahideen broke into the Old City, an area at the heart of Fallujah, meeting no ground resistance from American occupation forces.
Fridayユs turn of events paints a different canvass and is surely one the US wants to keep under their belt as long as possible. Our sources tell us that the battle plan now is to keep the momentum up, retaking each area, one by one, until the occupiers are ousted from the city limits.
