BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Iraqi Shiites marched through the streets of Baghdad and the holy city of Najaf on Sunday to protest what they see as the coalition's targeting of Moqtada al-Sadr, an influential Shiite cleric who has spoken against U.S. presence in Iraq.
Al-Sadr also announced his active support for two of Israel's biggest enemies -- the Palestinian militant group Hamas and Lebanon-based Hezbollah -- during a sermon Friday.
Demonstrations outside Baghdad's Green Zone, where the U.S.-led coalition is headquartered, prompted the coalition to temporarily restrict travel in the area, fearing violence.
So far there have been no reports of violent outbreaks in Baghdad.
However, a Spanish coalition spokesman said protesters in the southern city of Najaf opened fire on a base housing Spanish troops around noon local time. The gun battle is still underway, Lt. Col. Novelles told CNN En Espanol.
Novelles, who did not know what the Shiites were protesting, said an Iraqi building in Najaf has also come under attack by demonstrators.
He did not have any information about casualties in either incident.
However, witnesses and hospital workers told The Associated Press at least four Iraqis, including two soldiers, died during the protest in Najaf. At least 30 people were injured, they said.
Hazem al-Araji, a Shiite cleric demonstrating in Baghdad, said he was angry about reports that U.S. forces arrested al-Sadr's deputy and then surrounded the cleric's house for five hours
"We call on the Americans to stop chasing the clerics," he said.
A CNN stringer saw no military presence around al-Sadr's house Saturday night.
And a spokesman for Spanish coalition forces denied a report Saturday from al-Sadr's office in Najaf that coalition forces had nabbed his deputy, Mustafa al-Yaacoubi.
Other demonstrators continue to protest last weekend's closing of Al Hawza newspaper, which has been linked to al-Sadr.
The coalition closed the newspaper last Sunday for 60 days, accusing its publishers of inciting violence against coalition troops by publishing false reports that blame coalition forces for bombings carried out by insurgents.
The newspaper accuses the coalition of restricting free speech.
"The coalition forces shut down the Al Hawza newspaper by the orders of Paul Bremer because it is honest about what it says and that it attacks the coalition forces," said newspaper manager Amer Al-Husseini. "Every newspaper in the world writes about the way the coalition forces attack the Iraqi people."
The decision to halt travel around the Green Zone from 5 a.m. until noon (8 p.m. Saturday - 4 a.m. Sunday ET) was made "with the concurrence of" Paul Bremer, the top U.S. civilian administrator in Iraq, according to a statement issued Saturday night from Consular Officer Beth Payne.
"These demonstrations have a very high probability of turning violent," Payne said.
2 U.S. Marines killed
Meanwhile, two U.S. Marines have been killed in separate incidents this weekend in Iraq's vast Al Anbar province, according to the Coalition Joint Task Force.
One Marine died in action Saturday; the other died Sunday of wounds received in action a day earlier, CJTF said.
Both were assigned to the 1st Marine Division.
The CJTF did not release any more details, citing security risks to U.S. forces.
Al Anbar province includes the restive city of Fallujah, as well as much of western Iraq.
With the deaths, 605 U.S. forces have been killed in the Iraq War, 411 from hostile fire, 194 from non-hostile incidents.
Of those, 466 were killed after President Bush declared an end to major combat on May 1 -- 296 from hostile fire, 170 from non-hostile situations.
