Hikmatyar To Sue Reuters Over "Fabricated" Interview

Former Afghan prime minister and chief of Hizb-e-Islami, Gulbadin Hikmatyar has said he is going to take "legal action" against Reuters news agency for releasing a "fake" and "fabricated" interview with him aimed at creating rifts between him and the government of Iran.
"I have not granted interview to any news agency or newspaper calling for Jihad [struggle] against foreign forces in Afghanistan," Hikmatyar told Rafiq Afghan, editor-in-chief of Pakistan's Urdu daily "Ummat", by telephone from Tehran Friday, February 8.
"This is totally untrue and aimed at creating rifts between me and my Iranian friends."
Reuters released Tuesday, February 5, an interview with Hikmatyar who, according to the wire service, called for armed Jihad against U.S. and other foreign forces in Afghanistan.
Reuters claims the interview was taken by one of his correspondents in Tehran.
Hikmatyar said he had been contacted by a Reuters correspondent requested him to spare some time for an interview, which he said he declined.
"The release of this fake interview aims to increase the U.S. pressure on Iran, which has been continuously blamed for for harboring Taliban and Al-Qaeda members on its soil," Hikmatyar was quoted by Afghan, a close friend of his, as saying.
"I have personally protested to the Reuters administration for releasing such a fake interview and I will also serve them legal notice," Hikmatyar, who has been residing in Tehran since 1996 following the fall of Kabul to the Taliban militia, said.
Iran has given Hikmatyar the protocol as Afghanistan's prime minister since 1996.
According to Hizb-e-Islami sources, Hikmatyar has also sent a note to the Iranian foreign office protesting over the comments of Interior Minister Abdul Wahid Mausvi, who reportedly had warned the former Afghan prime minister that he would be deported from Iran if he called for or participated in any armed struggle against foreign forces in Afghanistan.
"The Interior Minister should have contacted me before issuing such remarks," he said in his note.
Hizb sources claimed that the Iranian foreign ministry had apologized over Mausvi's remarks saying he (Mausvi) would be questioned about the remarks, which too, was not a matter relating to his portfolio.
