South African Deputy President Jacob Zuma has drawn condemnation from opposition parties by saying it was unacceptable for the West to categorise the attack on the USA as "terrorism", but accept a US-led alliance attack on innocent Afghan civilians as legitimate.
Addressing Muslims at Durban’s West Street mosque, Zuma called on the government to rethink the definition of terrorism.
Zuma said the word is being interpreted differently in opposing sections of society, especially after the September 11 attacks in the USA.
The ANC’s main opposition party, the Democratic Alliance, said Zuma was "playing a dangerous game".
In a statement, DA chair Joe Seremane said that "quibbling over definitions creates the impression that he (Zuma) might be supporting Osama bin Laden - surely this is not the case?"
Zuma’s statement follows former President Nelson Mandela’s retraction of support for the terror campaign in Afghanistan.
Meanwhile, the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) has also welcomed Mandela’s about turn, saying the US government "must stop behaving as if the world begins with America and ends with America."
