Taliban deny having nukes, claim arrest of US troops
Say US using chemical weapons

ISLAMABAD: Afghanistan ruling Taliban on Monday refuted the reports of possessing or producing nuclear weapons by the student militia. Addressing a crowded press conference, Taliban Ambassador Mulla Abdus Salam Zaeef said, "Afghanistan cannot produce a single cup of glass what to talk of nuclear weapons." He categorically denied his country had the capability to produce nuclear weapons. Taliban claimed to have arrested American servicemen but did not give details of their number, location and date of arrest. He confirmed the reports of the arrest of a CIA agent in Kandhar but did not mention the date of arrest and his nationality. It is widely speculated the agent was a high-profile Afghan, like commander Abdul Haq.
Zaeef refuted the allegation of forced conscriptions saying, "the number of Mujahideen needed for front lines exceeds the need." "We are receiving volunteers from Afghan people every day."
Zaeef said: "We are asking volunteers to stay back as we do not need them now. The ground battle has not yet started; and it would not be wise to let them come in as it would create congestion in cities and camps making them more vulnerable to the enemy air strikes."
About the Turkish involvement in the military operations, the Taliban ambassador said they are wasting their time. The ambassador contradicted reports of rift within the Afghans. To a question about loss of support among Pashtuns after the killing of Abdul Haq, he said that Afghanistan was not for Pashtuns or non-Pashtuns. "Abdul Haq has sacrificed his life for America's evil objectives." The Afghan people are united for Jehad against the evil forces, said the ambassador.
To a question regarding death reports of British-Pakistanis in Kabul, he said these reports were not true. Refuting the reports that Taliban associate Ahmad Rabit was an Egyptian belonging to al-Qaeda, the ambassador said he is an Afghan hailing from Kandhar and has no links with Al-Qaeda.
The Taliban envoy said the Bush administration believes American war on Afghanistan has entered a new phase. "In the first phase they could not earn any significant gain as the Pentagon wished to achieve, except the genocide of Afghan civilians in the main cities of Kabul, Kandhar, Mazar-e-Sharif and Heart."
He said intensified air raids brought for the Americans a wave of anti-American campaign throughout the world. Zaeef said the new phase of American attacks on Afghanistan included infiltration of their agents. The arrest and execution of Abdul Haq by the security forces of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan is a clear answer to these, he remarked sarcastically.
He said America wants to disintegrate Afghanistan. He believed that the US wanted to install a puppet regime in the north of the country and separate it from its southern part. "We believed from the beginning America is not fighting so-called terrorism but has wicked designs in our country."
"These (designs) are being revealed with the passage of each day. However, we are sure these designs will face fiasco in this land of martyrs and heroes as other designs have faced failure," the ambassador hoped. He said, "we have always warned the Americans that Afghans are empty handed but full of determination and faith to defend their homeland and religion."
The Taliban envoy remarked, "for a highly trained army like Americans with such sophisticated systems and mechanisms, it is a shame to make so many mistakes and go astray on civilian sites everyday." He accused the Bush Administration of "repeating their tyranny and atrocities of Japan, Korea, and Vietnam in Afghanistan." The ambassador said the shortage of food and medicine was causing loss of precious lives. "We call on all NGOs to immediately send their relief to the suffering Afghan people before the beginning of the winter."
Reuters adds from Kabul: Taliban accused the United States of using chemical weapons and invited foreign observers to check the claim. But one deputy minister acknowledged that the war-shattered country did not have the facilities to test for chemical use. "We have some patients with superficial injuries with symptoms of chemical weapons," doctor Wazir of Kabul's Wazir Akbar Khan hospital, told a news conference.
Public Health Minister Mullah Abbas also said the militia had proof that chemical weapons were being used. "Our findings prove that this is true. These bombardments have radioactive rays and chemical materials that also cause cancer," he told the same news conference. Both men cited cases of chemical poisoning. Deputy public health minister, Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai, said the government did not have testing facilities and would welcome outside observers.
"If there are more cases coming, we hope to be able to invite delegations to verify it and test it," he told Reuters Television. Doctors said such cases had been reported in several hospitals across Afghanistan, and Stanikzai cited between 10 and 15 cases.
"We can give details to people and doctors who understand for explanation. But we have several cases of acute diarrhoea and also cases of breathing problems. In some of the cases it happened that people died," Stanikzai said.
"We do not have sophisticated laboratories in Afghanistan to test the blood of people and analyse it," he said, adding that the Taliban could not trust neighbouring countries to carry out the testing because they backed US-led attacks against them.
Wazir described the case of a 10-year-old boy with superficial wounds, but with respiratory problems who died after six hours. He said a 50-year-old woman who had minor injuries had also died. "They were both toxic cases," he said. "We don't have the ability to make a diagnosis, but clinically we see symptoms as such."
