http://www.ainfos.ca/A-Infos/ainfos05916.html

Paper Tiger TV

Dear all,

Last September 13, I've sent an email to a social theory list in which I provided some information about the falsity of the images of Palestinian celebration for the terrorism in USA, information given to me by a teacher. I spent the last day looking for that teacher, and, unfortunately, when I found her, she DENIED having access to such images.

She said that she was sure she had seen the images back in 1991, but SHE CAN'T PROVE. She was not willing to provide further information, DENYING what she had said before to a full class of students.

I sincerely apologize for this uncertain information; unfortunately I can't prove the information contained in my last post; IT'S ONLY A CONJECTURE, THAT THOSE IMAGES OF PALESTINIANS CELEBRATING IS FALSE. I bought the idea myself, and reproduced it for you because of the importance of it, in the case it was to be confirmed.

There's an important point in the power of press, specifically the power of CNN.

All around the world we are subjected to 3 or 4 huge news distributors, and one of them - as you well know - is CNN. Very well, I guess all of you have been seeing (just as I've been) images from this company. In particular, one set of images called my attencion: the Palestinians celebrating the bombing, out on the streets, eating some cake and making funny faces for the camera.

Well, THOSE IMAGES WERE SHOT BACK IN 1991!!! Those are images of Palestinians celebrating the invasion of Kuwait! It's simply unacceptable that a super-power of cumminications as CNN uses images which do not correspond to the reality in talking about so serious an issue.

A teacher of mine, here in Brazil, has videotapes recorded in 1991, with the very same images; he's been sending emails to CNN, Globo (the major TV network in Brazil) and newspapers, denouncing what I myself classify as a crime against the public opinion. If anyone of you has access to this kind of files, serch for it. In the meanwhile, I'll try to 'put my hands' on a copy of this tape.

But now, think for a moment about the impact of such images. Your people is hurt, emotionally fragile, and this kind broadcast have very high possibility of causing waves of anger and rage against Palestinians. It's simply irresponsible to show images such as those.

Finally, I'd like to say that we all regret and condemn all that has happened in the last days; but Nikos has a point here. I really don't want to be misunderstood here, but the truth is that US government had shown no respect for other countries in the last decades. In the 60s and 70s they had halped lots of military coups throughout the world (including Brazil in 64). Later, with Reagan and Bush Father, the Washington Consensus have been demolishing the bases of our economies, making us more and more dependant (and, many of us, prehocupied with this situation).

Your current president quickly made things worse: Kioto Protocol, Star Wars, Colombia Plan, the exchange of rain forest for pieces of external debt, tha abandonment of the position of third party in negotiations between IRA and England, and between Palestinians and Israel. All those mistakes in US external politics made your country more hatred than before, and, of course, more vulnerable.

Listen, I'm NOT justifying the terrorist actions that took place in your country; but it seems to me that, if your leaders had come along another path of thoughts and actions, you wouldn't be suffering what you are now.

It is definitely not true that CNN shot the images in 1991. Those images are not from 1991, those images are real and from now. Just pay attention to some details and you'll notice. There's the Pepsi machine, there're those new cars which didn't exist back in 1991.

CNN says fake footage claims are 'baseless and ridiculous'

CNN says accusations it faked footage of Palestinians celebrating the US terror attacks are baseless.

Palestinian journalists and officials reportedly claim the footage dates back to 1991, but was passed off as being current.

CNN says a Reuters camera crew filmed the celebrations in East Jerusalem hours after the hijackings.

It says the allegations stem from an email by a Brazilian student.

The Universad Estatal de Campinas-Brasil (Unicamp) says one of its students sent the email after apparently receiving information from a professor at another institution.

Marcio AV Carvalho later realised the claims were false and sent out a correction, says Unicamp.

A spokesman said: "The original message, however, was distributed all over the world, often with many distortions."

A CNN spokesman told Ananova: "CNN rejects as baseless and ridiculous an allegation being circulated by email and the internet claiming that CNN televised 10-year-old videotape to illustrate Palestinians celebrating in the wake of the horrific September 11 tragedies in the US.

"CNN applauds Unicamp for setting the record straight. The videotape in question was shot by a Reuters TV camera crew on September 11."

According to the Islamic Republic News Agency, the Palestinian Journalists' Association has condemned CNN for "journalistic treachery".

Whatever news I get I'll pass to you.

More on Carvalho's lies... (english)
by Marv Albert 9:00am Sun Sep 16 '01

First, a clarification: the footage of Palestinians celebrating the murderous attack on U.S. targets was actually filmed by an Associated Press cameraman, not CNN (the footage aired on virtually all U.S. news outlets).

Second, it should be noted that Ahmed Abdel Rahman, the Palestinian Authority's Cabinet Chairman, threatened the life of the reporter, saying that Palestinian authorities "cannot guarantee" his survival if the footage aired. USA Today's Matthew Kalman reported that Rahman extended his threat to other news agencies as well. These threats delayed the release of similar footage in Ramallah, Bethlehem, and other Palestinian towns.

Third, the same news organizations which aired the footage of Palestinians celebrating (including firing automatic weapons into the air, endangering their own people) also showed the footage of Yassir Arafat conveying his horror at the attacks, and dutifully reported that he donated blood himself to aid the victims here in the U.S. WHY WOULD OUR NEWS ORGANIZATIONS HAVE REPORTED THESE EVENTS, IF WE WANTED TO DISTORT THE TRUTH, AS CARVALHO SUGGESTS?

I feel truly sorry for misguided idiots like Carvalho. In addition to blaming U.S. economic "imperialism" for his country's ills, instead of on the decades of mismanagement by Brazil's own officials, he has also contributed egregious misinformation to the international public in this time of crisis.

He should be ashamed of himself! His lies not only are an insult to US. journalists, but to the intelligence of the U.S. domestic public.

It's true, this journalist's assumption that these images were old was somewhat idiotic. But on the other hand, how do we explain why the media does have a clear ideological slant (suggesting otherwise is true idiocy). Conspiracy theories are not only epistemologically ungrounded (actually more interesting on psychanalytic grounds), but also are ultimately rooted in the same desire to demonize others as the efforts of the media and the president. By claiming that there is a group masterminding the media coverage, we assume these people have malevolent interests seeking only the war, etc. We need some kind of critical mechanism for understanding that the people in the positions of responsibility who effect political and social change under the aegis of a certain ideological position are not evil or mean-hearted or ultimately hateful, but simply understanding international and domestic events and politics in the only way that they are capable. I.e. fatalism.

Now more than ever, fatalism could be attractive to you too.

As you can tell, I'm torn by my position. But I obviously think that we cannot demonize people, but we also cannot sustain a basic naivete about the entrenchment of media production (really more honest rather than "coverage") in a deeply ideological ground.

By the way, the suggestion that Arafat was giving blood, while possibly true, stands in the face of simple regulations that prohibit even Americans who have spent time outside of the US in the past three years from donating blood. I'm sure that Arafat's would have never gotten to the US.

I'd like to thank Marcio for coming forward with this apology and admission. It's been causing a lot of trouble on Indymedia since the bombing, and was rather irresponsible to present in the way he did. I'm glad he came out and said he didn't have access to the images, and couldn't prove his claims - hopefully, that will put this issue to rest.

Why was this report picked up so heavily? Why is there so little trust in the mainstream media? Look up "GM NBC truck tests" on Google, or FAIR's articles on John Stossel's "special reports", or compare the initial reporting of the Gothenburg shootings with the later STV special report that contradicted a lot of what both sides - police and protesters, but especially the police that most media listened to - claimed about the protests. It's things like that, alongside the hundreds of other failures of journalists and editors to maintain integrity and a respect for the facts above all else, that led some to give credence to Marcio's story without real proof.

I'm happy Marcio came out; I actually expected to never hear anything again on the subject. Give him some credit for owning up to his mistakes, as this will hopefully put a stake in the "fake footage" story. A few Palestinians celebrated, the PA tried to confiscate the footage, but don't forget how many more Palestinians - indeed, most Muslims - condemned the attacks and mourn alongside their fellow humans.
