Singer George 'Standing Up For Life'

Singer George Michael has been saluted as "standing up for life and sanity" by the original performer of the anti-war track he has recorded. Michael has performed a cover of The Grave, a song by Don McLean originally penned as a commentary on the horrors of the Vietnam war.McLean, famed for writing smash hit American Pie, said he was proud of the former Wham frontman.

In a statement, he said: "I am proud of George Michael for standing up for life and sanity. I am delighted that he chose a song of mine to express these feelings.

"We must remember that the Wizard is really a cowardly old man hiding behind a curtain with a loud microphone. It takes courage and a song to pull the curtain open and expose him. Good luck George."

The Grave was recorded for McLean's 1971 album, American Pie, which stayed in the UK charts for over a year.

McLean said he was very opposed to the possible Iraq war.

The track has been recorded for MTV UK & Ireland and will be played by the station's network across Europe.

Michael has left the hard-hitting lyrics largely unchanged for his version, which will be aired from Monday.

Brent Hansen, chief executive of MTV Networks Europe, previously said: "MTV Europe is free from political standpoint and prides itself in offering its audience a number of perspectives on a variety of issues that are important to them."

Yesterday, Michael apologised for saying young chart stars should drop plans for their own anti-war musical effort.

George Michael's Anti-War Song

George Michael has announced that he will record an anti-war song to demonstrate his feelings about a potential war with Iraq. It will be a cover of Don McLean's track The Grave for MTV UK & Ireland.McLean wrote the song in 1971 and it was included on his successful American Pie album.

Michael has left the lyrics largely unchanged for his version which will be aired from Monday.

Brent Hansen, chief executive of MTV Networks Europe, said: "MTV Europe is free from political standpoint and prides itself in offering its audience a number of perspectives on a variety of issues that are important to them.

"George Michael has a history of expressing strong, personal views, with inimitable creativity and conviction that resonates with MTV Europe audiences."

Michael faced a backlash for his last protest song Shoot The Dog, in which he ridiculed Britain's subservience to the US.

He has also apologised for saying young chart stars should drop plans for their own anti-war musical effort.

He said: "I think I was being a musical snob. I had a conversation with my sister today and she actually reminded me that it's not just about stopping this war, it's about keeping the pressure on."

U2 Star Bono Blasts Blair

Rock star Bono says Tony Blair's backing for possible war on Iraq is "sincerely wrong". The U2 singer said he understood the Prime Minister's reasons for backing President Bush - but did not agree with him.

"Tony Blair is not going to war for oil," he said.

"Tony Blair is sincere in his convictions about Iraq. In my opinion he is sincerely wrong."

●●Martyr

Bono, who has made a name for himself as a campaigner for Third World debt and poverty relief, was speaking after a meeting with French President Jacques Chirac.

The French are against any military campaign and have threatened to veto a UN-backed strike.

"We must not make a martyr of Saddam Hussein. He is good at working the cameras. We shouldn't make it easy for him."

Bono, wearing his trade-mark wrap-around glasses and a black suit, said the main reason for his meeting with Chirac was to discuss Aids, which he described as "the forgotten war".

●●Aids

"That is a war on a different scale, more people are going to die from Aids than we have lost in any war, in any dispute. I want to focus people (on it) even at this time."

Bono has campaigned actively to help HIV/Aids sufferers in Africa and, like Chirac, is among many nominees for this year's Nobel Peace Prize.

He has also spoken out extensively about conflict.

The band's third album War, released in the early 1980s, dealt with nuclear conflict and the effect of war.

Bono says Blair "sincerely wrong" on Iraq

PARIS (Reuters) - Rock star Bono, who has made a name for himself as a campaigner for Third World debt and poverty relief, says Prime Minister Tony Blair's backing for possible war on Iraq is "sincerely wrong".

"Tony Blair is not going to war for oil. Tony Blair is sincere in his convictions about Iraq," said Bono, speaking after a meeting with French President Jacques Chirac.

"In my opinion he (Blair) is sincerely wrong," said the Irish lead singer of rock band U2, wearing his trade-mark wrap-around glasses and a black suit.

Blair has strongly backed U.S. President George W. Bush in pressing for a possible war against Iraqi President Saddam Hussein for not destroying alleged weapons of mass destruction, while Chirac is pushing for further efforts to disarm Iraq peacefully.

"We must not make a martyr of Saddam Hussein," Bono said. "He is good at working the cameras. We shouldn't make it easy for him."

Bono said the main reason for his meeting with Chirac was to discuss AIDS, which he described as "the forgotten war".

"That is a war on a different scale, more people are going to die from AIDS than we have lost in any war, in any dispute. I want to focus people (it) even at this time."

Chirac has been pressing at the United Nations for continued efforts to disarm Iraq peacefully and for war to be used only as a last resort.

Bono has campaigned actively to help HIV/AIDS sufferers in Africa and, like Chirac, is among many nominees for this year's Nobel Peace Prize.

Rap star to perform anti-war song at Brits

Rap star Ms Dynamite is to duet with George Michael at the Brit Awards, with an anti-war version of his track Faith.

She has altered the lyrics of the song and turned it into a protest against the possible conflict with Iraq.

She will sing live at Thursday's music awards ceremony, while Michael will appear via video-link from the US.

Ms Dynamite has been vocal in her opposition to war with Iraq and took part in Saturday's peace rally in Hyde Park.

The star - nominated for four awards - approached Michael about re- working his 1987 hit, and he offered to perform a duet with her.

Michael caused controversy last year when he released the single Shoot The Dog, which attacked Tony Blair's close relationship with George W Bush and their policy towards Iraq.

A Brits organiser said: "Ms Dynamite really wanted to do something different for her performance, and sending out an anti-war message is very important to her.

"Faith is one of her favourite songs, so she phoned George and asked if she could change the lyrics. She sent them to him and he was so impressed that he offered to duet with her. Unfortunately he can't be at the Brits, so he will appear on video."

The spokesman denied reports that some record executives were unhappy that the awards ceremony was being politicised.

He said: "The Brits has a history of artists sending out a political message - a few years ago Bono and Muhammad Ali launched the Jubilee 2000 'drop the debt' campaign at the awards - and we are perfectly happy with Ms Dynamite's choice."

WAR ON WAR!

An anti-war alliance of musicians including JAY-Z, NAS and SHERYL CROW have formed 'MUSICIANS UNITED TO WIN WITHOUT WAR' in a bid to put further pressure on US President GEORGE W BUSH.

The formation of Musicians United To Win Without War was announced at a press conference yesterday (February 27) Russell Simmons and Benjamin Chavis of the Hip-Hop Summit Action Network.

With Simmons at the press conference in New York were Lou Reed, David Byrne and Roseanne Cash to support the group's stated aim of encouraging a focus on further UN inspections as a peaceful means of disarming Saddam Hussein.

Simmons said: "Everybody from gangsta rappers like 50 Cent to Puffy to Jay-Z, all these guys we know what they can do.

"I mean, Puffy is certainly more well-liked and well- known across the world than George Bush. Jay-Z is much more liked and well-known across the world than Colin Powell, so we know they have big voices and we know people pay attention.

"And young people certainly pay attention, and they have been the ones that have been silent. But we're just going to work now and I promise you that they're going to wake up."

Other artists involved in Musicians United To Win Without War include Mos Def, Natalie Imbruglia, OutKast and Missy Elliott.

Massive Rap and Rock Anti-War Effort Emerges

By Chuck 'Jigsaw' Creekmur, BET.Com Staff Writer

Posted Feb. 27, 2003-- A massive multi-genre coalition of recording artists has convened to voice their opposition to George Bush's pending war with Iraq.

The musicians unveiled a full-page ad in New York Times on Wednesday where dozens of hip-hop and rock entertainers dissolved musical barriers to join forces for a common cause. Those that have signed the petition include Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliot, Outkast, Nas and Jay-Z. In addition, many rockers like Massive Attack, Dave Matthews, Natalie Merchant and a number of others are involved.

"Iraq's been contained for 12 years. Hundreds of thousands don't have to die. Stand up, demonstrate, and have your voice heard," said Russell Simmons at the press conference.

The coalition, "Musicians United to Win Without War," is a sub-group of the umbrella anti-was group 'Win Without War" which dubs itself "a mainstream voice advocating alternatives to unilateral action or preemptive strikes" and is comprised of 32 independent organizations, churches and entertainers. The group advocates for United Nations inspections and in general efforts to disarm Saddam Hussein without war. The collective opposes the invasion and occupation of Iraq.

"In the rush to war, the voices of reason and debate have been trampled and ignored. 'Musicians United to Win Without War' represents a diverse group that feels that war is not an inevitable, forgone conclusion" said David Byrne, former lead singer of Talking Heads and a co-founder of the group.

In agreement with the singer, rock artist Michael Stipe stated that a war would only add to the already high tensions.

"What we are facing is a complex and multi- faceted problem. Simply bombing Iraq would only create more problems, making an already bad situation much worse," said Stipe.

"Our groundswell of support is clearly growing as more and more Americans begin to reject the Administration's arguments for war," said Tom Andrews, former Congressman and National Director of "Win Without War."

The group also helped lead a "virtual march" where they have faxed, called and sent floods of email throughout the Senate offices on Wednesday.

Popstars panned by awards panel

One True Voice have been named Britain's worst group at the Naomi Awards.

The awards - a spoof alternative to the Brits - were dominated by former Popstar and Pop Idol acts.

One True Voice topped the poll for worst group. It follows the cancellation of their joint concert tour with Girls Aloud because of poor ticket sales.

Gareth Gates was named worst British male at the awards ceremony, organised by TV channel Music Choice. His chart-topper Unchained Melody was named the year's worst single.

Victoria Beckham also pulled off a double by being named worst female and taking the worst album prize for her self-titled debut.

Cheeky Girls - another act which came to fame through Popstars: The Rivals - picked up two awards, worst international group and single for The Cheeky Song.

Teenage rappers Blazin' Squad landed the title for least convincing urban act.

The award winners were chosen by 100 figures from the music industry and media.

The awards were named in honour of Naomi Campbell, who failed to set the charts alight with her pop career in 1994 when her single Love And Tears made number 40.

Music Choice Head of music & marketing Simon Bell said: "It's about time that music awards stopped taking themselves so seriously, so Music Choice founded the Naomi Awards in a bid to lighten things up."

Mos Def and Russell Oppose War

By Chuck 'Jigsaw' Creekmur, BET.Com Staff Writer

Posted Feb. 18, 2003-- Brooklyn rapper Mos Def and music impresario Russell Simmons appeared in a series of anti-war television ads on Valentine's Day, which will be broadcast for a week. One of the 30-second slots will feature Simmons and the other will include Mos Def.

The ads will run in New York City and Los Angeles across cable networks, BET, MTV and other outlets.

In the slots, the two rap icons maintain that the pending war on Iraq is premature and, furthermore UN inspections have "contained" Saddam Hussein. In addition, Simmons and Mos will emphasize that the money spent on war would be better served on food, national health care and better education for impoverished people.

People will be able to view the ads at truemajority.com.

The television commercials were produced in New York City by Danny Schechter of Global Vision and the spots are the latest in an anti- war crusade by Ben Cohen's True Majority organization. The actresses Susan Sarandon and Janeane Garofalo were featured in Cohen's earlier add.

Cohen is best known as the co-founder of Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream. Both Mos Def and Russell Simmons have a history of being hip-hop activists and the pair have collaborated on Def Poetry Jam, where artists often rhyme about social issues.

In October, a group of celebrities and ordinary citizens alike protested President Bush's war cry against Iraq with "Not In Our Name," a "pledge of resistance." Saul Williams, a poet, recorded a song, "Not In Our Name Pledge of Resistance," which was then distributed to radio and online outlets.

TRAVIS, CRAIG DAVID, ENO SIGN ANTI-WAR NEWSPAPER AD

TRAVIS, CRAIG DAVID and BRIAN ENO are amongst stars who have signed a newspaper advert opposed to proposed military action on IRAQ.

Since last year, various musicians have been vocal in their opposition to the military build up in the Middle East, led by the US and supported by the UK.

A full-page advert has been taken out in today's The Guardian newspaper (February 13) by the 'No War On Iraq Liaison' group, signed by a variety of MPs, musicians and public figures.

The advert reads: "We add our voices to the growing and broad range of domestic and international opinion opposed to the United States proposed military action on Iraq.

"We believe that such a war would be both immoral and contrary to international law. It would inevitably further destabalise the situation in the Middle East. We urge the British government to withhold support for a war on Iraq and call on all who support peace and respect international law to take a similar stand."

Musicians Against the War

9/1/2003

Peace Not War is a new anti-war album, inspired by the action of some Australian musicians, featuring artists such as Public Enemy, Billy Bragg, Alabama 3, Roots Manuva, Chumbawamba, Coldcut, Massive Attack, Nitin Sawhney, Sia and Ani DiFranco.

The 31-track double album, which is claimed to redefine protest music, covers a variety of genres and features both well-known and obscure artists who are campaigning for peace as opposed to the war on terror. Proceeds from the compilation, which will be sold worldwide, will go to local peace groups in each country.

The album's genesis was sparked last September when musicians Kelly and Mudge, of Australian band Change, sent out an email request for contributions for the proposed fundraiser CD.

"When we got involved in the anti-war movement in London," say Kelly and Mudge, "it was clear that the 'Stop the War' Coalition were making a huge impact with little funding, and we hoped that music could fund them to do more, as well as inspire people to get active."

"Over 60 bands submitted a song: many had already written about the war and others went straight into the studio when they heard about the compilation," they added. "The higher up the music industry food chain we ventured, the more musicians we uncovered who were interested. We were also surprised to be offered help from managers and record companies, manufacturers and press: everyone was coming out against the war."

The Sounds of Silence

Are musicians afraid to protest war with Iraq? When only six rockers sign an anti-war petition, David Browne wonders when music lost its conscience

-----------------------------------------------------------
【写真】PEN MIGHTIER THAN GUITAR? Matthews is one of only six musicians to sign anti-war petition
-----------------------------------------------------------

Remember when rock stars did crazy, zany things like voice their opposition to armed conflicts around the world?

Me neither, and I'm just old enough to recall those flag- burning, draft- card-trashing days. Off the top of my head, I can easily name a dozen anti-Vietnam songs from the '60s and a bunch of anti-nuke/anti-Cold War tunes from the '70s and '80s (including Nena's ''99 Luftballoons,'' believe it or not). I'm having a much harder time conjuring anything since then, starting with the Gulf War of 1991, during which most rock stars seemed to have their mouths sewn shut. Some went as far as to band together for a ''We Are the World''-style single to support U.S. troops instead of commenting on why we were there to begin with.

What got me thinking about this unusual state of affairs was last week's announcement that a coalition of celebrities dubbed Artists United to Win Without War had issued an open letter to the White House opposing war with Iraq. The names on the list include Ethan Hawke, Kim Basinger, Matt Damon, Martin Sheen, Helen Hunt, Danny Glover, Noah Wyle, former ''Baywatch'' star Alexandra Paul -- and, if my tabulation is correct, all of six musicians, three of whom are in R.E.M. (The others are Dave Matthews, Bonnie Raitt, and Jackson Browne.)

Granted, the current scenario is much more complex than it was in the '60s or the Ronnie-talk-to-Russia '80s. Pop's response to the Sept. 11 attacks was a slew of songs that ranged from ruminative to jingoistic, an accurate reflection of the varied ways in which we all attempted to deal with that devastation.

But with war seemingly around the bend, and the Bush Administration more than eager to get on with it, you'd think the pop community would rally a little. But so far it hasn't. Not only are there a mere six musicians on that petition, but only one of them, Matthews, is a current hitmaker. Are musicians afraid to go against the status quo and risk alienating the public? (During the Gulf War, Randy Newman's quietly released ''Lines in the Sand'' got him in a lot of trouble, whereas Styx's ''Desert Storm Mix'' of their dreadful ''Show Me the Way'' was a hit.) Are they merely waiting for something to happen? Is the corporate consolidation of the business hanging over their heads, making them wary of speaking out? Where's Zack de la Rocha when you need him?

Presumably, we'll have to wait until combat begins before we can evaluate pop's response to an Iraqi war. But why do I have the feeling that even then it'll be muted? When Phil Ochs sang ''I Ain't Marchin' Anymore'' nearly 40 years ago, he meant it a statement on warriors who refused to fight. Today's pop stars would probably miss the irony in its title.

Have musicians lost their political voice?

Artists, Celebrities Protest Bush's Proposed War on Iraq

By Chuck 'Jigsaw' Creekmur, BET.Com Staff Writer

Posted Oct. 8, 2002 -- In an effort to temper the president's stiff pro-war stance, a cadre of artists, singers, celebrities and ordinary citizens are protesting a possible war with Iraq with Not In Our Name, a "pledge of resistance." Poet/rapper Saul Williams has recorded a song, "Not In Our Name Pledge of Resistance," which has been distributed to radio, online outlets and to any individual requesting the song.

The organization said in statement, "President Bush has declared 'either with us or against us.' Here is our answer: We refuse to allow you to speak for all the American people. We will not give up our right to question. We will not hand over our consciences in return for a hollow promise of safety."

The goal of the petition is to alter the course of the presidential administration's war policy, which has grown increasingly confrontational since the Sept. 11 attacks in New York and Washington, D.C.

"We refuse to be party to these wars and we repudiate any inference that they are being waged in our name or for our welfare. We extend a hand to those around the world suffering from these policies; we will show our solidarity in word and deed."

Sporting over 16,000 names, the list includes such stars as Ossie Davis, Mos Def, Jane Fonda, Michael Franti of Spearhead, Danny Glover, bell hooks, "Boondocks" cartoonist Aaron McGruder, Boots Riley of The Coup, Oliver Stone, Alice Walker, Jeffrey Wright and others.

In a statement to BET.com, Saul Williams said, "I am releasing these songs because music is perhaps our greatest means of political amassment, because the airwaves are imbalanced and have conditioned us either into a state of apathy or to a state of condoning unjust violence and militarism carried out in our name."

In the song, Williams says, "It's not about retaliation/ Your history of war does nothing more than scar imagination/ Your blindfolded justice makes you trust in fortuity like it's random/ It's tandem/ You teach to attack and then question who planned them."

The Not In Our Name organization recently held rallies in New York, Los Angeles, South Carolina, Chicago, North Carolina and other places across the country, corresponding with the one-year anniversary of the U.S. bombing of Afghanistan following 9/11.
