Islamic leader denounces US 'lies' and 'terror'
From Amy Chew in Jakarta
ABU BAKAR BASHIR sits cross-legged on the floor of his offices betraying no trace of tension at being one of the worldユs most wanted men.
"For sure there is a lot of news, but in my heart I do not have any feelings or thoughts of that (being arrested). I do not harbour such thoughts because I feel I have not done anything wrong," he said, with a fatherly smile.
The Indonesian Government named him yesterday as the leader of Jemaah Islamiyah, the radical Islamic group believed to be behind the Bali bombing. But he said that the organisation operated in Malaysia and Singapore, and not Indonesia. His meeting with The Times in his Jakarta office was less an interview than a series of denials. Asked if he was the leader of the Jemaah Islamiyah, he replied: "That is not true. That is manufactured to net other people and myself."
Asked whether Omar al-Faruq, allegedly the senior al-Qaeda operative in South-East Asia, had given him $74,000 (」47,500) to carry out the Bali bombing, he chuckled and said: "Thatユs such a big lie. This is all made up by America and Jews."
Yesterday he brought a $1 million action against Time magazine for libel in an article that appeared last month linking him to Jemaah Islamiyah. Speaking outside a court in southern Jakarta where he has launched the libel suit, he said he had nothing to do with the Bali attack. "It is an accusation from infidels," he said. "It is like a witch hunt. They are cracking down on Muslim fundamentalists."
Throughout the interview with The Times, Mr Bashir remained composed. But when asked about America, his back straightened and his voice crackled with anger. Mr Bashir runs a Koranic boarding school in central Java. He has more than 2,000 students and adheres to a hardline interpretation of Islam. Surrounded by scores of followers, Mr Bashir had the last word. "If anything happens, I am sure they (Muslim youths) will defend Islam, not me individually," he said.
