Japan Official Rented Home to Gangster
TOKYO (AP) - Japan's home affairs minister has been renting a house to a prominent gangster arrested last month on extortion charges, a minister's aide said Tuesday.
Minister Toranosuke Katayama was unaware his tenant for the past two years, Yasuyuki Inami, was an executive in a local branch of Japan's biggest crime syndicate, the Yamaguchi-gumi, aide Hiromu Nakatsuki said.
``The real estate agent handled the entire transaction,'' Nakatsuki said. ``Katayama is in no way acquainted with the suspect.''
Inami was arrested last month after forcing his way into a state-linked corporation in charge of public works and allegedly demanding that the company award a project to a subcontractor linked to him, a local police official said.
The official, who refused to give his name, could not comment on whether police will investigate whether links exist between Katayama, a member of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, and Inami, chairman of his crime group's ``political association.''
The political wings of organized crime syndicates are familiar on Japan streets for blaring ultra-rightist anthems from black vans draped with xenophobic slogans and rising sun flags.
Nakatsuki said the minister rented the 3,200-square-foot home to Inami and his family for $380 a month - much less than normal for a home that large. The minister has issued an eviction notice.
The Home Affairs Ministry and Katayama's office in Tokyo had no comment.
