クーデターは失敗して当然だったが、粛清はさらなる混乱を招く

妄想にとりつかれた人間にも実在の敵がいる――。トルコで15日に起きたクーデター未遂は少なくともこの格言の証明にはなった。
エルドアン大統領はトルコ政治を支配し始めてから過去15年の間に、軍の将校やジャーナリスト、警察、社会活動家、クルド系の野党勢力、イスラム主義に協力する人々への攻撃を続けてきた。そしてエルドアン氏に敵対する勢力が存在することが判明した。
皮肉なのは、クーデターの失敗によって、エルドアン氏がロシアのプーチン式独裁政権への歩みを加速する可能性があるということだ。

トルコの全野党はエルドアン氏と共にクーデターを非難したが、それは当然のことだ。エルドアン氏と与党・公正発展党(AKP)は昨年11月の総選挙を含め、選挙で勝利し続けている。ほとんどのトルコ人は、軍が自分たちに都合のよい影の政府「ディープステート」を運営し、選挙で選ばれた政府を当たり前のように転覆させた時代に戻ることを望んでいない。
クーデターは危険なタイミングでトルコの安定を脅かした。トルコは既に経済の減速と過激派組織「イスラム国(IS)」による攻撃の加速という問題を抱えている。トルコ軍は同国南東部でクルド人ゲリラと戦い、空軍は領空侵犯を繰り返すロシアとにらみ合いを続けている。シリアからは250万人もの難民が押し寄せ、多くが街頭で物乞いをしている。
もしクーデターが成功していれば、首謀者たちは反発する数百万の市民を武力で押さえつけなければならなかっただろう。エジプトでは2013年に当時のシシ国防相が選挙で選ばれたモルシ大統領から権力を奪ったが、トルコの民衆はクーデターを支持しなかった。
参謀総長を含めた軍の幹部もクーデターを支持しなかった。大統領を猛烈に批判している人々さえ、内戦は望まなかったはずだ。トルコが崩壊していれば、シリアの混乱はさらに欧州に迫り、ISなどイスラム聖戦士にも付け入るすきを与えていたはずだ。
