Tuesday, 23 January 2007.

US imposes super tight “security” around al-Fallujah, but the result appears to be more rather than fewer Resistance attacks.

Residents of Baghdad neighborhood shoot down US helicopter gunship Tuesday morning.

Sadr spokesman reportedly acknowledges ties to Iranian Revolutionary Guards; says puppet “Prime Minister” al-Maliki also involved.

US cuts off Internet access from many Sunni districts of Baghdad, sparking fears of impending American offensives against civilian neighborhoods.

Shi‘i sectarian militias in puppet “Shock Troop” uniforms abduct 27 Palestinians in Baghdad before sunrise Tuesday.

Al-Anbar Province.
Al-Hadithah.

US-imposed blockade of al-Hadithah takes toll on innocent lives.

In a dispatch posted at 5:31pm Makkah time Tuesday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that a humanitarian disaster is expected ultimately to result from the US blockade on the city of al-Hadithah.

The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported that the city has been under a US blockade for more than two months. Motor traffic is banned in the city under the terms of the American-imposed restrictions. On Tuesday the Association of Muslim Scholars in Iraq issued a statement denouncing the two-month blockade on the city.

The Association statement noted that among the victims of the American blockade was a child of one year of age who died of the cold as his father was trying to get him to a clinic late at night aboard a bicycle. The child’s father, Mahdi Salih an-Ni‘mah, said that his son had died because he was not able to drive him to the clinic in a car, thanks to the American ban on motor traffic.

The city, now surrounded on three sides by earthen barriers and barbed wire, can only be accessed through one entry point, which is controlled by US occupation troops.

Bomb disables US Humvee in al-Hadithah.

In a dispatch posted at 4:52pm Makkah time Tuesday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that an Iraqi Resistance bomb exploded by a US patrol in al-Hadithah, 236km northwest of Baghdad on Tuesday morning.

The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported eyewitnesses as saying that the blast, which took place in the al-Khasafah area of eastern al-Hadithah, disabled a US Humvee and severely wounded the four American troops aboard it.

Resistance fighters battle US troops in al-Hadithah Tuesday morning after mortars struck US headquarters in al-Haqlaniyah Monday night.

In a dispatch posted at 2:14pm Makkah time Tuesday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that an Iraqi Resistance force armed with light and medium machine guns and rocket launchers ambushed a US patrol in the market in the middle of al-Hadithah, 236km northwest of Baghdad on Tuesday morning.

The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported eyewitnesses as saying that the battle went on for about half an hour and that two American Humvees were damaged in varying degrees in the course of the fighting and at least four American troops were killed or wounded.

At the time of reporting US forces still had the area where the battle occurred sealed off.

In other news in the area, Iraqi Resistance forces blasted the US military headquarters in al-Haqlaniyah, not far from al-Hadithah, with three 82mm mortar rounds on Monday night, Mafkarat al-Islam reported. Big explosions shook the US facility, witnesses said, adding hat American helicopters then flew in and prowled the skies over the area shooting off flares in an attempt to locate the Resistance fighters who had struck their headquarters.

Al-Fallujah.

US imposes super tight “security” around al-Fallujah, but the result appears to be more rather than fewer Resistance attacks.

In a dispatch posted at 4:41pm Makkah time Tuesday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that the city of al-Fallujah, 60km west of Baghdad is living through serious difficulties caused by the heavy “security measures” imposed by US occupation troops and their puppet Iraqi army allies at command posts that control all approaches to the city.

The al-Fallujah correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported local people suffer from intentionally long and disruptive delays when trying to get into their city. Lines of up to 150 cars back up at every check point and it takes about 15 minutes for each car to undergo the searches and questioning prior to being allowed to proceed into the city. Previously the US and puppet army checkpoints only took a few minutes to process cars.

The behavior of US and puppet “Iraqi National Guard” personnel has also become much more harsh and abusive, the correspondent reported.

More than two years ago new ID cards were devised for all residents of al-Fallujah. The new IDs carry the individual’s name and occupation, fingerprints, and a print of the person’s iris. But despite the new and technologically advanced ID system, the puppet regime has done nothing to solve the problems associated with the delays experienced by local residents at the checkpoints.

The as-Sajar checkpoint controls passage to and from northern al-Fallujah; an-Nu‘aymiyah controls the route to the south; al-Muwazzafin is the checkpoint to the east of the city and al-Halabisah controls entrance from and exit to the west of the city. Two other checkpoints are the as-Sakaniyah checkpoint on the northern side of the city and another checkpoint on the way into the Industrial Zone of al-Fallujay in the south of the city. That checkpoint is intended for large-capacity trucks.

The correspondent noted that although the ostensible purpose of all the “security” restrictions is to reduce the number of Resistance attacks, the irritation and anger that the checkpoints entail actually seem to increase rather than cut back the number of Resistance assaults. Not a day goes by, the correspondent noted, without at least three or four Resistance operations against the US forces or their puppet Iraqi army allies.

Resistance bomb damages Humvee near al-Fallujah before dawn Tuesday.

In a dispatch posted at 2:37pm Makkah time Tuesday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that an Iraqi Resistance bomb exploded by a US patrol in the southern outskirts of al-Fallujah, 60km west of Baghdad, at 5am local time before dawn Tuesday morning.

The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported eyewitnesses as saying that a bomb that had been planted by the side of the road in the al-Hasy area, a southwestern suburb of al-Fallujah, blew up by a US patrol, damaging a Humvee and killing or wounding all the Americans aboard.

The witnesses said that the members of the patrol then stormed nearby houses and attacked local residents, beating and abusing them. They said that the troops also stole quantities of money and portable telephones as well as a significant number of gold bracelets. The witnesses said that US helicopters flew in and prowled the area at low altitude for several hours following the bombing and retaliatory raids.

Resistance bomb disables US Bradley armored vehicle near al-Fallujah Tuesday morning.

In a dispatch posted at 2:14pm Makkah time Tuesday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that an Iraqi Resistance bomb exploded by a US patrol in the ‘Amiriyat al-Fallujah area, about 7km southwest of al-Fallujah, at about 7am local time Tuesday morning.

The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported eyewitnesses in the housing complex in ‘Amiriyat al-Fallujah as saying that the bomb, which was planted by a dirt road west of the complex went off by a passing American patrol, extensively damaging and disabling a US Bradley armored vehicle. Three US troops aboard it were wounded in varying degrees of severity. The witnesses said that after the attack, American forces imposed a “security cordon” around the area and closed the road there for more than two hours.

Resistance blasts US headquarters in as-Saqlawiyah with heavy mortars Tuesday morning.

In a dispatch posted at 2:05pm Makkah time Tuesday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that Iraqi Resistance forces fired four heavy 120mm mortar rounds into the US military headquarters in as-Saqlawiyah, about15km northwest of al-Fallujah at about 7am local time Tuesday morning.

The al-Fallujah correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported eyewitnesses in as-Saqlawiyah as saying that the barrages set off explosions that shook the US headquarters and sent plumes of smoke and dust billowing into the sky.

Former Republican Guard general assassinated in al-Fallujah.

In a dispatch posted at 1:07pm Makkah time Tuesday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that unknown armed men shot and killed a former general in the Iraqi Republican Guard in the city of al-Fallujah, 60km west of Baghdad at 10am local time Tuesday morning.

The al-Fallujah correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported a local puppet police source as saying that unknown armed men in a civilian car cut off and shot down Brigadier General Sulayman Hamad Nayil al-Khalifawi, who had several positions of command in the Republican Guard during the war with Iraq in the 1980s. The source said that the shooting took place near the as-Sumud Bridge in the ar-Rusafi area of western al-Fallujah. The source said that the attackers sprayed General al-Khalifawi with light Kalashnikov fire, killing him instantly. The attackers fled the scene, the source reported.

Iranian agents are believed to have been behind the assassination of several prominent former Iraqi military officers who took part in the war against Iran.

Baghdad.

Residents of Baghdad neighborhood shoot down US helicopter gunship Tuesday morning.

In a dispatch posted at 1:06Makkah time Tuesday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that a short while earlier residents of the predominantly Sunni al-Fadl neighborhood of Baghdad shot down a US helicopter.

The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported eyewitnesses as saying that US and puppet Iraqi army troops with air support from helicopter gun ships carried out raids and searches in the area al-Fadl in central Baghdad on Tuesday morning, in the course of which they arrested the Imam of the al-Masraf Mosque in the area. A group of local residents, however, fired a shoulder-launched rocket at a small American helicopter that was covering the operation of the ground troops and brought the aircraft down.

Quds Press reported that a fierce battle erupted when US and puppet Iraqi troops tried to advance into the al-Fadl district. Witnesses said that local residents put up armed resistance to the Americans and their puppet Iraqi allies who used tank cannon and machine guns to blast their way forward against the men of the neighborhood. One US vehicle was destroyed in the course of the fighting when a local man blasted it with an RPG-7 rocket-propelled grenade.

Witnesses told Mafkarat al-Islam that US troops and their puppet Iraqi allies called reinforcements into the area after the downing of the helicopter. At the time of reporting the US and puppet Iraqi troops had surrounded the area with a tight “security cordon.”

Quds Press reported, however, that the US military issued a statement denying that any helicopter had been shot down over the neighborhood and surmising that a “private plane” may have been brought down.

Sadr spokesman reportedly acknowledges ties to Iranian Revolutionary Guards; says puppet “Prime Minister” al-Maliki also involved.

In a dispatch posted at 7:50 GMT Tuesday, Quds Press reported that ‘Abd al-Hadi ad-Darraji, the official spokesman of Shi‘i sectarian cleric Muqtada as-Sadr’s movement had admitted that high-ranking officers in the Iranian Revolutionary Guards were in contact with the commander of the Shi‘i sectarian death squad militia commander known as Abu Dar‘.

Quds Press reported that “informed Iraqi sources” had disclosed some of the admissions that were being made by ad-Darraji under questioning by the Americans. Ad-Darraji was arrested by US troops in Baghdad on 19 January.

According to the sources, ad-Darraji stated that the puppet “Iraqi Prime Minister” Nuri al-Maliki was fully aware of the relationship between high-ranking Revolutionary Guard officers and the Shi‘i sectarian death squad leader.

The correspondent for Quds Press reported the source as saying that under questioning by US officers, ad-Darraji had acknowledged that he headed a Shi‘i court run by the Jaysh al-Mahdi militia whose task was to issue religious rulings (fatwas) concerning what neighborhoods and which people in Baghdad were to be targeted for sectarian attack by the Jaysh al-Mahdi gunmen. The Shi‘i “court” was reportedly set up under ad-Darraji’s supervision following the bombing of the Shi‘i Shrine of the Imam ‘Abd al-Hadi in Samarra’ on 22 February 2006 ミ an event that signaled the beginning of wholesale Shi‘i sectarian rampages against Sunnis throughout Iraq in an attempt to split the country on religious lines.

The sources told Quds Press that US forces arrested ad-Darraji after questioning of a number of Iranians arrested in the Iranian Consulate in Irbil yielded information that those Iranian consulate employees in far northern Iraq were closely related to ad-Darraji who was in charge of a Shi‘i “court” that issued rulings and fatwas against Iraqis who were abducted and imprisoned in Baghdad and other cities.

The sources told Quds Press that during his own interrogation, ad-Darraji admitted that puppet “Prime Minister” Nuri al-Maliki was aware of the relationship with the Iranians and of all the attacks being carried out by the Jaysh al-Mahdi in Baghdad.

The sources added that al-Maliki and a large number of other leaders of the Shi‘i sectarian “United Iraqi Alliance” which runs the puppet “government” were pressuring the Americans to release ad-Darraji.

On Friday, 19 January a special US unit accompanied by a puppet Iraqi force raided the az-Zahra’ Shi‘i mosque in the eastern Baghdad district of al-Baladiyah and arrested ‘Abd al-Hadi ad-Darraji, the spokesman for the Muqtada as-Sadr movement in Baghdad, claiming that he was connected with the leaders of the “death squads” that have kidnapped, tortured, and murdered thousands of Iraqi civilians.

The Shi‘i sectarian Jaysh al-Mahdi militia, run by Muqtada as-Sadr, a Shi‘i cleric loyal to Iran’s “conservatives,” is seeking to extend its regional hegemony and step into the shoes of the American occupation in Iraq as it leaves under the blows of the Iraqi Resistance. The US, on the other hand, which has made use of Shi‘i sectarian militias such as the Badr Brigades ミ close to Iran’s pro-western “liberals” ミ and the Jaysh al-Mahdi in its drive to occupy and control Iraq, is now attempting to reduce Iranian influence in the country.

To forestall Iran’s attempt to replace America as colonial power in Iraq, the Iraqi Resistance continues its battle against pro-Iranian as well as US and pro-US groups and facilities.

Shi‘i sectarian militias in puppet “Shock Troop” uniforms abduct 27 Palestinians in Baghdad before sunrise Tuesday.

In a dispatch posted at 12:20pm Makkah time midday Tuesday, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that a large number of gunmen wearing the uniform of the official puppet Iraqi security forces abducted 27 Palestinians in the middle of Baghdad on Tuesday morning.

The Baghdad correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported eyewitnesses as saying that a large force of men wearing uniforms of the puppet “Iraqi Interior Ministry Shock Troops (Maghawir)” ミ a force that is dominated by Shi‘i sectarian militias ミ raided the well-known al-Karradah area at 6am local time (before sunrise) Tuesday morning. The attackers arrested 27 local Palestinian men and youths and took them away to an unknown destination.

The witnesses said that the raiders in the “Shock Troop” uniforms beat up the prisoners and members of their families during the raid and stole money and valuables ミ such as gold wedding bracelets ミ from the homes they raided.

Witnesses reported that the operation was almost surely the work of Shi‘i sectarian militias, since they have carried out many such attacks on Palestinian refugees living in Iraq. The bodies of many later turn up badly tortured and murdered, in keeping with the common practice of the Shi‘i sectarian death squads.

According to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) there were an estimated 34,000 Palestinians in Iraq in 2003. The Commission estimated that 20,000 Palestinians were still in Iraq as of October 2006. Many of the Palestinian refugees in Iraq have been living there since being expelled from their homes and land in Palestine by Zionist colonial invaders in 1948.

Employee of Egyptian embassy in Baghdad abducted by unknown men Monday.

In a dispatch posted at 12:22pm Makkah time midday Tuesday, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that an unknown group of armed men kidnapped an employee of the Egyptian Embassy in Baghdad on Monday.

The Baghdad correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported eyewitnesses as saying that unknown armed men forced Nabil ‘Abd al-‘Ati, an Egyptian working at his country’s embassy in the occupied Iraqi capital, to get into a car with three civilian men with exposed faces in the al-Mansur neighborhood of Baghdad.

Sources close to the Egyptian embassy said that the abducted man was a service worker at the embassy who has lived in Iraq for a long time. It has been estimated that in 1999 there were 66,000 Egyptians living and working in Iraq.

US cuts off Internet access from many Sunni districts of Baghdad, sparking fears of impending American offensives against civilian neighborhoods.

In a dispatch posted at 6:05pm Makkah time Tuesday evening, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that US occupation forces suddenly cut off access to the Internet in most predominantly Sunni districts in occupied Baghdad starting on Monday.

The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported that the US cut off access to the Internet in al-Jadiriyah, al-‘Amiriyah, al-Karradah, and parts of al-A‘zamiyah, and al-Yarmuk. The Americans cut off access not only from those who use telephone lines for Internet access but also shut down wireless service.

The move raised fears in the stricken areas that the US forces are planning some sort of major attacks in those areas.

Week-long US arrest campaign against pro-Iranian Jaysh al-Mahdi contrasts with deadly battles against Iraqi Resistance movement. US seen as hoping to use Jaysh al-Mahdi captives to bargain with Iran over control of Iraq, region.

In a dispatch posted at 5:02pm Makkah time Tuesday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that in keeping with the latest US “security plan” for Baghdad, US forces have captured some 600 pro-Iranian Jaysh al-Mahdi gunmen including more than 33 top leaders of the Muqtada as-Sadr Shi‘i sectarian movement in operations that have now gone on for about a week.

The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam noted that in contrast to American offensives against the Iraqi Resistance where massive use of lethal force is the norm, the US campaign against the Jaysh al-Mahdi in its Baghdad strongholds “Madinat as-Sadr” and ash-Shu‘lah has consisted almost exclusively in capturing rather than killing the pro-Iranian militiamen.

US spokesmen also acknowledge that many of the Jaysh al-Mahdi gunmen have fled to Iran on instructions from Shi‘i sectarian cleric Muqtada as-Sadr in order to avoid any confrontation with the US military.

News media recently reported that the Iranian regime in Tehran had sent a message to the US expressing an interest in negotiations in which the two sides would determine their respective spheres of interest in Iraq and the region. Press reports indicated that the US side rejected the Iranian overtures, apparently expecting the current arrest campaign against the Jaysh al-Mahdi to strengthen Washington’s hand as it looks towards cutting deals on more favorable terms over Iran’s efforts to dominate Iraq, the Iranian nuclear issue, and Iran’s broader influence in the region.

It would appear that the US has been imprisoning, rather than fighting and killing, the Jaysh al-Mahdi gunmen so that they might yet be used as “chips” in bargaining with Tehran over the two hegemonic countries’ respective “shares” in the region.

Resistance fighters beat back attack by Shi‘i sectarian militas on Sunni areas in Baghdad Tuesday afternoon.

In a dispatch posted at 4:47pm Makkah time Tuesday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that a short while earlier, large-scale and fierce fighting broke out between Iraqi Resistance units and Shi‘i sectarian militias in the middle of Baghdad.

The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported eyewitnesses as saying that the Resistance was able to throw back an assault mounted by the pro-Iranian Jaysh al-Mahdi militia on the as-Salikh district and the al-Qahirah neighborhood.

A source told Mafkarat al-Islam that the Shi‘i sectarian militias carried out a coordinated attack on the Sunni district of as-Salikh and the al-Qahirah neighborhood, but local residents quickly went into action.

Resistance men battled the attacking sectarians, setting three of their “civilian” cars ablaze and killing nine of their gunmen.

Afterwards, US troops and their puppet Iraqi “National Guard” allies surrounded the area and deployed in it as helicopter gun ships flew in at low altitude to provide cover for the occupation forces. This compelled the Shi‘i sectarian militias to withdraw, leaving the bodies of their dead behind. The puppet “National Guard” troops allied with the Americans then transported the corpses of the dead sectarian gunmen to a Baghdad hospital morgue.

Resistance fighters kill four Shi‘i sectarian militiamen in a car in Baghdad’s al-Fadl District.

In a dispatch posted at 4:12pm Makkah time Tuesday afternoon, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that Iraqi Resistance fighters attacked a car in which four members of a Shi‘i sectarian militia were sitting.

The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported eyewitnesses in the al-Fadl district of Baghdad as saying that the Resistance attack killed the four Shi‘i sectarian gunmen. Puppet policemen later transported the bodies of the dead sectarians to a nearby hospital.

Iraqi tribal Shaykh assassinated by unknown armed men Monday.

In a dispatch posted at 12:21pm Makkah time midday Tuesday, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that unknown persons assassinated an Iraqi tribal shaykh in southwestern Baghdad on Monday.

The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported local residents of the area as saying that unknown men in a civilian car opened fire with machine guns on Shaykh Riyad Husayn al-‘Akidi, the Shaykh of the al-‘Akidat tribe, in front of his house in the al-‘Amil neighborhood of southwestern Baghdad. The witnesses said that the attackers fled the scene after the attack and local people were unable to catch up with them.
