Such attacks on US vessels in the Euphrates River have been on the increase in recent weeks.
Eyewitnesses who live in Ra’s al-Gharbi in ‘Anah reported that the Resistance has been attacking US gunboats with medium machine guns and rocket launchers on a continuous basis recently and the American cameras are apparently an attempt to stop such attacks. The US troops have also banned fishing in the area because of the Resistance attacks and the cameras are probably intended to enforce that ban as well.

The Shi‘i sectarians began to provoke the local residents and arrested four Sunni youths. Four other mortar shells blasted into homes of local residents, injuring seven people, including a woman and several children. The attack brought local defenders and Iraqi Resistance fighters onto the streets and into the fray as they attacked the Shi‘i sectarian forces who were ordering ambulances not to respond to the emergency and not to take the injured to hospital.

Then about 15 minutes after the Shi‘i sectarians left the area US helicopter gun ships showed up and rocketed the area around ash-Shaykh Ma‘ruf and the Umm Kulthum Coffee House, killing one local resident and wounding four more of them.
At the time of reporting the situation in the area was quiet, as the Shi‘i sectarian forces were gone. Swarms of American helicopter gun ships continued to prowl the skies above, however.

In March 2006, Sofia dispatched a force of 120 troops and 34 support personnel ostensibly to guard a camp of Iranians at Ashraf, 70km north of Baghdad. The force was to remain in Iraq for one year.
On Wednesday a Bulgarian Defense Ministry spokesman quoted Bliznakov as saying that the Bulgaria “will continue its participation in Iraq after the mandate of current troops expires.” The Bulgarians are slated to continue guarding the camp throughout 2007. Reuters reported that the Defense Ministry decision had not been formally approved by the government or parliament.
Massive public opposition to Bulgaria’s involvement in America’s occupation of Iraq compelled the authorities in Sofia to withdraw Bulgarian troops by the end of 2005. But under American pressure, the Prime Minister found a new signboard under which to deploy forces in Iraq. Bulgarians were sent back in March 2006, this time with a lower profile that would arouse less public outcry. Calling it a “humanitarian mission” the Bulgarian regime opted to take responsibility for guarding the Ashraf camp on behalf of the American occupation forces.
