(AHN) - Six people are on trial in Germany for burning copies of The Diary of Ann Frank.
One suspect admitted to burning the book during his trial. All six defendants are charged with inciting racial hatred and disparaging the dead. This trial adds to a fear building in Germany that Neo-Nazism is growing in the country.
According to prosecutors, Lars Konrad of East Germany threw the novel into a bon fire during a party in June 2006.
According to the court, burning the book supports Nazism. Any denial of the Holocaust or acts of racial hatred can cost an offender up to five years in prison.
The diary was found after World War II. The author, Ann Frank, died in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in 1945. She wrote in her diary about her experience hiding from persecution with her family in Amsterdam. She died just before her 16th birthday.
Konrad's attorney argued that he was showing distain for that time in German history by burning the book. But prosecutors argued that the bon fire was meant to mock those in the concentration camps, including Ann Frank.
