In a dispatch posted at 8:15pm Makkah time Sunday night, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that US forces had refused to allow relief supplies sent from the United Arab Emirates to the people of ar-Ramadi into the city, now under an American blockade for several months. The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported from ar-Ramadi, about 110km west of Baghdad, that Dr. Ahmad Ziyad al-‘Ubaydi of the Iraqi Red Crescent Society had said that the US forces refused to let the food and medical supplies sent from the United Arab Emirates into the city.
Dr. al-‘Ubaydi said that US troops halted the supply convoy about 15km east of the city on the Baghdad-ar-Ramadi Highway and ordered the convoy to accompany US vehicles and return to Baghdad. Dr. al-‘Ubaydi told Mafkarat al-Islam that the US military personnel told the head of the convoy, an Iraqi member of the al-Mansur Branch of the Red Crescent Society, that the people of ar-Ramadi were “terrorists who don’t deserve to live.” The aid convoy made contact with representatives of the Iraqi puppet regime to try to secure passage for the supplies into ar-Ramadi but the regime officials were uninterested in the matter, the correspondent reported.
The correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported that people in the beleaguered city had been eagerly awaiting the assistance, having been cut off by the Americans for several months, not only from supplies, but from running water and electricity. Women and children had already lined up to wait for the convoy. But with the Americans determined to keep all aid out of the city, the convoy was obliged to turn around and head back to Baghdad before sunset, when the hours of curfew set in.
