Taiwan's Fading Independence Movement
Robert S. Ross
From Foreign Affairs, March/April 2006
Article preview: first 500 of 2,207 words total.
Summary: Never popular at home, Taiwan's independence movement has suffered successive electoral defeats and is increasingly irrelevant. The movement's demise and the rise of politicians promising greater cooperation with Beijing have removed the only plausible cause of war between China and the United States.
Preventing a War Over Taiwan
Kenneth Lieberthal
From Foreign Affairs, March/April 2005
Article preview: first 500 of 3,480 words total.
Summary: Although neither China nor Taiwan wants war, both pursue policies that raise the risk of bloodshed: the first by issuing vague warnings, the second by testing their limits. To stabilize the situation, the Bush administration should help broker a temporary agreement under which Taipei would put off independence and Beijing would stop threatening to attack.
A Trade War with China?
Neil C. Hughes
From Foreign Affairs, July/August 2005
Article preview: first 500 of 4,292 words total.
Summary: With China's economic clout growing rapidly, Americans are accusing Beijing of every offense from currency manipulation to crooked trade policies. None of these charges has much merit, but they have increased the probability of a U.S.-Chinese trade war that would do considerable damage to both sides.
China's "Peaceful Rise" to Great-Power Status
Zheng Bijian
From Foreign Affairs, September/October 2005
Article preview: first 500 of 2,067 words total.
Summary: Despite widespread fears about China's growing economic clout and political stature, Beijing remains committed to a "peaceful rise": bringing its people out of poverty by embracing economic globalization and improving relations with the rest of the world. As it emerges as a great power, China knows that its continued development depends on world peace -- a peace that its development will in turn reinforce.
China's Search for Stability With America
By Wang Jisi
From Foreign Affairs, September/October 2005
Summary: No country can affect China's fortunes more directly than the United States. Many potential flashpoints -- such as Taiwan, Japan, and North Korea -- remain, and true friendship between Washington and Beijing is unlikely. But their interests have grown so intertwined that cooperation is the best way to serve both countries.
Understanding China
Kishore Mahbubani
From Foreign Affairs, September/October 2005
Article preview: first 500 of 4,105 words total.
Summary: The United States has done much to enable China's recent growth, but it has also sent mixed signals that have unnerved Beijing. More consistent engagement is in order, because the course of the twenty-first century will be determined by the relationship between the world's greatest power and the world's greatest emerging power.
