Diggers 'may pull out of Iraq'
January 31, 2006
AUSTRALIA would review its troop commitment in southern Iraq if Japan decides to pull out, Defence Minister Brendan Nelson said today.
Media reports in Tokyo today said Japan would begin withdrawing its troops, which are all non-combatant, in March and would pull out entirely by May.
The reports said Australian troops protecting the Japanese contingent would be withdrawn at the same time.
Dr Nelson said Australia would review its commitment in southern Iraq's Al Muthanna province if Japan decided to withdraw earlier than expected.
"If we are formally informed by the Japanese government that it intends to withdraw its engineers from southern Iraq, the Australian Government will then review the commitment that we have with our troops in that area," he said.
But he said Australia was in Iraq for the long haul.
"We are determined to do the right thing. We are determined to see it through," he said.
Japan announced in December it would extend its historic military mission in southern Iraq until the end of 2006, and Prime Minister John Howard indicated at the time that Australians would stay on with the Japanese.
Australia's 450-member Al Muthanna Task Group is charged with protecting the Japanese forces doing reconstruction work.
Japan's 550 ground troops are strictly limited by the country's pacifist constitution and rely on British and Australian forces to maintain security.
Dr Nelson said Japan was on the verge of making a decision.
"A meeting was held between (Australia), the United States (and) the United Kingdom on January 23.
"We do know that the Japanese Government is on the verge of making a decision as to whether it will withdraw its engineers from Al Muthanna in southern Iraq," he said.
