ID cards will miss 2008 deadline, say tech firms
By Clayton Hirst
Published: 03 July 2005
Government plans to introduce the controversial national ID card by 2008 could be delayed by at least a year.
Leading companies that are in discussions with the Home Office about providing the IT systems to support the cards, believe that the Government's timetable is too ambitious.
Nick Kalisperas, the director of public sector at Intellect, the trade organisation representing IT companies, said: "2008 is tight. If the Government wants to proceed with that deadline then it has to be selective in terms of the technology. There is no reason why the Government should not let the 2008 deadline slip a bit to get the procurement process right."
Eric Woods, an analyst at IT consultancy Ovum, added: "2008 looks ambitious as it will be a complex procurement process."
The ID cards will require the development of a huge database to store cardholders' details. The project will also see the introduction of fingerprint and iris scanners nationwide.
A Home Office spokeswoman insisted that the project was on track. "Our working projection is that it would take around three years for the detailed design and procurement, and to create the infrastructure for the scheme to cover the whole population," she said.
However, she admitted that the cards would not be available to all Britons until 2014.
