Al Quds大学長のNusseibeh（パレスチナ）とヘブライ大学長のMagidor（イスラエル）が、イギリスでのハイファ大とBar-Ilan大との共同研究と学会参加の拒否について反対する共同の声明を出した。声明では「我々はボイコット或いは差別待遇ではなく相互尊重に基づく協力こそが（和平と言う）目標に到達する術であると信じている、この声明は学問の自由、人権、民族と個人の平等の原則を前提としたものである」と言うものである。Nusseibehは「ボイコットはパレスチナの事態を悪くするだけである」と言う。Magidorは「研究の協力は、インフラ整備、平和な中東のために重要である。暴力と衝突ばかり伝えられているが、共同研究も進んでいるのだ」と言う。
一方、ADL-ブナイブリス等はアメリカの学会にイギリスボイコットを呼びかけている。
バーミンガム大学のブラックウェル教授（AUTの会計係）は、イスラエルとの共同研究はパレスチナを害してイスラエルのみに利益を与えるとしてボイコットに賛成しているが、AUTにも反対者が多い。

Britons are urged to end boycott of Israeli scholars

LONDON Challenging a boycott of Israeli universities by Britain's leading higher education union, Palestinian and Israeli academics joined on Thursday to urge an end to the prohibition.
Sari Nusseibeh, the president of Al Quds University, and Menachem Magidor, the president of Hebrew University, made a joint declaration at an international gathering of scholars debating human rights.
"Our position is based upon the belief that it is through cooperation based on mutual respect, rather than boycotts or discrimination, that our common goals can be achieved," the declaration said.
"Our disaffection with, and condemnation of acts of academic boycotts and discrimination and scholars and institutions is predicated on the principles of academic freedom, human rights and equality between nations and among individuals."
The move came one week before the Association of University Teachers of Britain meets to reconsider a decision made in April to bar Israeli faculty members at Haifa University and Bar-Ilan University from academic conferences and joint research. The boycott was in response to an appeal by 60 Palestinian organizations.
In an interview, Nusseibeh said that the calls for a boycott among Palestinians reflected what he termed the "worsening situation" between Palestinian and Israeli governments after more than four years of violence.
"The reason I don't believe the boycott is the way to go is that I believe peace must be built on the bridge between two civil societies," he said. While some people believe that one way to deal with Israelis was "to bash them on their heads, the other way is to reach to their hearts and it's the reaching out that's important."
Speaking separately, Magidor said: "Academic cooperation is extremely important for creating the infrastructure for, eventually, a peaceful Middle East. What people don't realize sometimes is that while you report a lot about the violence and confrontation, there is below the screen a lot of academic research and collaboration going on."
The British academics' move in April ignited a furor in Israel, the United States and Britain, bringing in powerful pro-Israeli organizations like the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith, which raised the possibility of a counterboycott of British universities by their American counterparts.
Sue Blackwell, a professor of English at the University of Birmingham, who is the treasurer of the Association of University Teachers and a supporter of the boycott, said her organization's meeting next week would consider a series of resolutions, many of them opposed to the boycott.
She challenged the joint declaration made Thursday, saying a recent survey showed that many of the staff at Al Quds University believed joint projects with Israeli academics damaged the Palestinian cause and benefited only Israel.
