SHAKAI, Pakistan: Offering symbolic gifts of a Kalashnikov assault rifle and a Quran to an army general, five powerful tribesmen were granted amnesty by Pakistan yesterday in return for a promise not to help Al Qaeda and Taliban fugitives.
The deal could end months of bloody confrontation between tribesmen and the Pakistan army in the lawless region of South Waziristan, but may unnerve the United States, eager for tougher action to be taken by Pakistan in the war on terrorism.
Authorities also agreed to release today 50 local men arrested in a major Pakistani army operation in South Waziristan last month, its largest since it threw its support behind the US campaign in Afghanistan after the September 11 attacks on America.
The amnesty was formalised at a ceremony attended by senior Pakistani government and military officials and by 10,000 tribesmen at Shakai village, 25km north of Wana, the main town in the region.
The five Zali Khel tribesmen, who had been accused of harbouring Al Qaeda men and have hundreds of armed followers, promised to live peacefully, be loyal to Pakistan and not take part in any terrorist activity - an assurance backed by a guarantee from their tribe.
Regional military commander Lt Gen Safdar Hussain said foreigners with wives and families in the region - previously branded as terrorists - would also receive amnesty if they surrendered by the end of the month.
"But if they don't accept this offer by April 30 then we will use force."
The five were expected to hand in a list of foreign militants living with them.
Amid loud applause from tribesmen famous for their independence from state authority, the leader of the five declared his allegiance.
"Pakistan is our home. We want peace here. The Pakistani forces are our brothers," Nek Mohammad said. "We regret for what has been done on the basis of misunderstanding."
Nek Mohammad's band faced a choice of surrendering or expulsion from their homeland.
