2 Girls Kept in Bunker For 3 Years as Sex Slaves

The Associated Press Police freed two young women who had been kept underground as sex slaves for more than three years, during which one of them gave birth twice and became pregnant a third time, an official from the prosecutor's office said Thursday.
The women, then 14 and 17, disappeared in September 2000 after going to a discotheque in Ryazan, 200 kilometers southeast of Moscow.
The search for them was called off after a few months and the girls, whose names were given only as Lena and Katya, were presumed dead.
They were found by police on Tuesday in a bunker constructed under a garage in the town of Skopin, in the Ryazan region, and their alleged captor was arrested on suspicion of kidnapping, the official from the Ryazan prosecutor's office said.
Lena, the 21-year-old, is eight months pregnant, according to the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
According to Kommersant, the pair described how a man and woman had invited them to drink vodka and go for a drive.
They said they fell asleep and later woke up in a dark room with just two beds and a table, Kommersant said.
Lena and Katya said they were not beaten but were repeatedly raped by their captor, whom reports identified as 53-year-old Viktor Mokhov.
Lena gave birth to two boys during her captivity; the infants were abandoned at the doorstep of an orphanage, Ryazan police chief Vladimir Tsypkov told Rossia television.
At one point, Lena managed to scribble a note asking for help and stuck it inside one of the children's diapers, but it was found by Mokhov, Kommersant reported.
The girls said they were half starved for the first three years in captivity and only about six months ago they were given a television and a simple hot-plate to cook on, the official in the prosecutor's office said.
The official would not say what led authorities to the garage.
One of the former captives said Mokhov began to take them out for walks last fall, one at a time and only at night.
Rossia said that one of them managed to pass a note to someone while out for a walk.
Mokhov, a factory worker, built the bunker under a garage about 15 meters from his house during a three-year period preceding the abduction, the official said.
Rossia showed footage of police and prosecutors opening a small door resembling that of a safe, and then the women, now 21 and 17, sitting on narrow beds, smoking and appearing calm.
Mokhov was also shown being led out of the basement.
