Taliban Battle Coalition Forces In Ouruzgan, Nine American Soldiers Dead
Jan 30, 2004
By Zafir Jamaal, JUS
In Paktika, in district of Ouruzgan, nine American soldiers have been killed and several others wounded in a Taliban attack. The soldiers were apparently on route to meet up with Pakistani intelligence officials for a joint operation Wednesday when they were ambushed by Mujahideen. Nine died at the scene and several others were wounded. Some vehicles were also destroyed in the attack. Pakistani soldiers and intelligence officials retreated over the border. The entire area has been cordoned off and a house to house search is underway while helicopters were seen in the air overhead. As usual with any coalition attack site, no reporters were allowed to go in and no word on the number of wounded soldiers is available. The number of casualties has been compiled using reports from eyewitnesses and Mujahideen who took part in the battle.
US Central Command is reporting that an explosion of a weapons cache in Afghanistan has killed seven U.S. soldiers, wounded three and left one missing. An Afghan interpreter also was wounded in the blast near the city of Ghazni, 130 km southwest of Kabul. US sources claim that soldiers were working near the weapons when the explosion occurred. There were signs the weapons dump was booby-trapped but an investigation was continuing, said US spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Brian Hilferty. The wounded soldiers were evacuated to a hospital at Bagram air base, the U.S. headquarters in Afghanistan. We have not yet received details of this incident from sources at the scene.
In another attack, two afghan soldiers were killed and 3 more wounded when their convoy was ambushed in Nadir Shah Kot. Mujahideen also fired rockets in Gardez that have killed three people who have not yet been identified. No other details are available. (JUS)
