Car bomb rips through Iraqi city
A pall of smoke hung above the blast area in Mosul
A car bomb outside a police station in the Iraqi city of Mosul has killed at least 10 and injured 45 while three US soldiers died in a separate attack.
Witnesses described a scene of carnage in Mosul outside the station which is near the northern city's university.
Black smoke hung above the building, which had been packed with police coming in to receive their salaries.
Some 300 Iraqi policemen have been killed by militants since the US-led coalition took control last year.
Sources at the Republican Hospital in Mosul said the dead included both police officers and civilians.
Tense city
According to unconfirmed local reports, a car drove through a security barricade in front of the police station before exploding.
The blast, which caught civilians waiting at a busy nearby bus stop, reportedly detonated ammunition being stored in the station, causing casualties inside.
A US military spokesman in the city, Major Hugh Cate, confirmed that none of the Mosul casualties were US troops as American and Iraqi rescue teams worked at the scene.
Mosul, about 365 kilometres (225 miles) north-west of Baghdad, is Iraq's third largest city and a Sunni Muslim stronghold where tensions exist between the Arabic and Kurdish communities.
There have been frequent attacks on US troops in the city, although rarely on the scale seen in parts of the "Sunni triangle" closer to Baghdad.
Convoy attack
A roadside bomb exploded between the cities of Kirkuk and Tikrit on Saturday, killing three US soldiers in a passing convoy.
A US military spokesman said no further details were available.
Saturday's attacks take place on the eve of a major religious holiday in Iraq and the Muslim world - the four-day Eid al-Adha, or the Feast of Sacrifice.
