Kerry Emerges as Big Winner
Lieberman Quits Race; Edwards Energized by S.C. Win

Sen. John F. Kerry of Massachusetts emerged as the big winner in today's Democratic presidential contests, winning four states and leading in a fifth. But Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina appeared to energize his campaign by taking South Carolina, his first victory in the campaign.
Kerry decisively won the contests in Missouri, Arizona, Delaware and North Dakota, according to partial returns and television exit polls, and was ahead in New Mexico. The victories allowed Kerry to retain his position as the front-runner in the race for the Democrats' presidential nomination, and they helped further winnow the seven-man field as Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman of Connecticut dropped out of the race.
In Oklahoma, Edwards and retired Army Gen. Wesley K. Clark were locked in a very tight race, with Kerry running third.
Kerry, 60, continued to rack up victories after winning the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary last month. He won the two biggest prizes of the night by taking Missouri and Arizona, the states with the largest and second-largest number of delegates at stake.
