By Omar Al-Faris
Resistance to American occupation ignited this weekend in four separate incidents including the downing of a U.S. Chinook helicopter caring American soldiers heading back to the US for two weeks leave that was shot down with advanced weaponry leaving 16 dead and 20 wounded.
The Chinook helicopter was flying from Fallujah to Baghdad when it went down about 9 a.m. near Amiryah and was part of a formation of two Chinooks carrying more than 50 passengers to the U.S. base at Baghdad International Airport who were heading out on leave.
"The Chinook was shot down by an unknown weapon," Col. William Darley a U.S. spokesman in Baghdad said however witnesses said they saw two missiles fired at the helicopter which indicates resistance fighters are employing advanced weaponry against their occupiers.
Iraqis at the site of the crash were celebrating word of the helicopter downing and shouting " Allahu Akbar!" and " Death to America" .
Another U.S. soldier was killed early Sunday by a bomb blast in the Iraqi capital while two American civilians were killed in a blast west of Baghdad.
A fresh attack on U.S. soldiers in Fallujah occurred at about 9 a.m. Sunday when an explosion struck one vehicle in a U.S. Army convoy. Eyewitnesses told reporters that four soldiers were killed but U.S. military sources said they could not confirm the report.
Another U.S. soldier was killed early Sunday by a bomb blast in Baghdad, an Army spokesman said. The spokesman said the soldier was evacuated to hospital after the blast, but died a few hours later. No other details were released to reporters.
Two US civilians working for the US Army Corps of Engineers destroying weapons were killed by a roadside bomb in Fallujah on. "We had two American private contractors killed and one slightly wounded in Fallujah when an improvised explosive device exploded as their truck drove by," Jack Holt, a spokesman for the US Army Corps of Engineers, said.
A land mine exploded Saturday on a road in the northern city of Mosul, killing two Americans in passing vehicles and wounding three other people. The U.S. military did not immediately confirm the attack in Mosul and more details weren't immediately available.
Meanwhile an oil pipeline also was reported on fire early Saturday about 10 miles north of Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit, an area that has seen widespread opposition to the occupation. Witnesses said they suspected sabotage because the blaze was preceded by an explosion during the night.
