Shiite Muslim Group Campaigns in Iraq
TINI TRAN
Associated Press
BASRA, Iraq - Driving a white pickup truck from one tiny village to the next, Salah al-Battat is on an old-fashioned political mission in a new Iraq. Over six hours and three stops, he shakes hundreds of hands, hugs children and listens to people's concerns over tiny cups of sweet tea.
As Shiite Muslim groups move to fill the power vacuum left by Saddam's regime, they are depending on local support. And al-Battat, Basra head of the largest of the Shiite opposition groups, the Iran-based Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq, is starting his political organizing - one village at a time.
