But with the Mullah Mohammed Omar's Taliban regime largely destroyed and Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda terrorist forces on the run, a number of U.S. troops are now returning home.
At the same time, more soldiers are departing ? but not for Afghanistan. Some 1,500 American soldiers are being sent to the naval facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where they will stand guard over as many as 2,000 prisoners from the war on terror.
"I believe there is a certain amount of risk associated with this mission and as such we are using only our best trained and ready U.S. military police," said Lt. Gen. B.B. Bell of the Army's III Corps and Fort Hood, Texas, base.
The U.S. troops will prepare the base for fewer than 100 "maximum security detainees" initially, but ultimately for as many as 2,000. They will also provide security at the center. The first detainees could arrive this week.
More than 100 soldiers left Fort Hood on Sunday for Cuba, with up to 300 soldiers from the facility expecting to participate in the operation there. Sunday's deployment orders went out to troops from Army forces from Fort Campbell, Ky.; Marines from Camp Lejeune, N.C.; Navy personnel from the Norfolk, Va., naval station; and Air Force personnel from Charleston, S.C., and Dover, Del.
