Islamic Jihad Claims Responsibility for Jerusalem Bombing
JERUSALEM, Dec. 5 (IslamOnline & News Agencies) - The Palestinian group Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for a bombing in West Jerusalem Wednesday that killed the bomber and lightly injured six other people.
In a statement faxed to several news agencies, the military wing of the movement, the Jerusalem Brigades, identified the attacker as Daoud Ali Abu Swai, from Artas village near Bethlehem.
The group said the attack came as a "first and swift response to the crimes of the enemy and its bombardment of Gaza, Jenin, Ramallah and the rest of the Palestinian cities. We tell the criminal enemy that the painful response is coming in the way."
The attacks happened shortly after 7:30 A.M local time Wednesday morning on King David Street in Jerusalem. Israel radio reported that flying glass very lightly injured six people.
Agence France-Presse (AFP) said that the bomber blew himself to pieces in front of the former Hilton hotel, slightly injuring three people, one day after Israel launched massive raids in the Occupied Territories.
According to the Tel Aviv-based daily newspaper, Ha'aretz, police are currently investigating whether the bomb went off prematurely. They are also investigating whether the bomber intended the David Citadel as his chief target or some other downtown Jerusalem spot.
The Islamic Jihad confirmed the theory, saying in the statement that Abu Swai had to blow himself up before entering the hotel, "where Israeli leaders were".
Ehud Olmert, mayor of West Jerusalem, said on Israel radio shortly after the bombing that two government ministers - Public Security Minister Uzi Landau and Religious Affairs Minister Asher Ohana - were staying at the David Citadel Hotel this morning. U.S. peace envoy Anthony Zinni, staying in a neighboring hotel, heard the explosion, according to the U.S.-based National Public Radio (NPR).
A fleet of ambulances was rushed to the scene and police sealed off the road, causing major disruptions in the city's rush-hour traffic.
Israeli army radio said on Saturday that Jerusalem was hit by a double bomb attack that left 12 people dead, including the bombers, and some 180 injured. Less than 12 hours later, another bomber killed 14 Israelis and a woman from the Philippines, as well as himself, on a bus in Haifa, northern Israel.
Meanwhile, Egyptian border sources said Tuesday that Israeli authorities closed the crossing border between Egypt and the Gaza Strip for an indefinite period.
About 200 Palestinians were reportedly forced to turn back as they were trying to enter Gaza when Israelis closed the border. The Israeli action intensified the military siege against Palestinian-ruled areas in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, which has occurred during the 15-month Palestinian Intifada, or uprising, against Israel's long occupation.
