Foreign Ministers in Tehran to Review Afghan Cause
TEHRAN TIMES POLITICAL DESK
TEHRAN
British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw was expected to fly to Tehran last night, less than two months since controversy surrounded his previous trip to the Middle East.
Straw will discuss the situation in Afghanistan with Iranian officials, as well as the state of bilateral relations.
Also Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hamid Reza Assefi announced here on Wednesday that British and Afghan foreign ministers were due to arrive in Tehran during the next two days to review the latest regional developments with senior Iranian officials.
During his visit to Tehran, Afghan Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah will brief his Iranian counterpart on the latest developments in his country, he said adding that the two ministers will also discuss prospect of the future developments in Afghanistan.
On one-day visit to Tehran of the British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, Assefi said that Tehran-London regional cooperation and the critical situation in the war-torn Afghanistan will be discussed by the two sides.
He is expected to continue his discussions with Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi regarding the Afghan situation and other regional and international issues during his stay in the Islamic Republic, the daily wrote.
Straw and Kharrazi last met on November 14 at United Nations headquarters in New York.
Straw came to Tehran on September 25 for a one-day visit, the first ever by a British foreign secretary, since the victory of the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
Straw will also confer with members of the Majlis Special Commission on Afghanistan, the commission spokesman said here on Wednesday.
"During the meeting, the two sides are to discuss the latest developments in Afghanistan as well as ways to establish a new broad-based government in the country," Heydar Ebrahim-Bay Salami told IRNA.
He gave no further details on the British foreign secretary's trip to Iran, but Straw's meetings with President Khatami and Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi is predictable.
The Majlis Special Commission, comprising 15 representatives from various groups at the Majlis, was established two months ago to follow up the developments taking place in Afghanistan.
During that trip he was received by President Mohammad Khatami of Iran.
The British foreign secretary is also scheduled to go to Islamabad after his Tehran trip to confer with Pakistani officials on the next Afghan government.
Also, the Dutch Embassy in Iran announced yesterday that the Dutch Foreign Minister, Jozias van Aatsen, will spend three days in Tehran. He will arrive on December 1 and meet officials here to review bilateral and regional developments, paying particular attention to the Afghan crisis.
According to a report carried by the Central News Bureau, this will be the Dutch minister's second trip to Iran since last year.
Iran has recently hosted many European and Arab officials, including ministers from Italy, Britain and Germany.
