Sharon to Import One Million Jews
LONDON, Nov 7 (IslamOnline & News Agencies) - Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has said he is planning to bring a million more Jews to Israel, the U.K. daily The Guardian reported Wednesday.
Sharon told the British broadsheet in an exclusive interview, "We are planning now to bring another one million Jews to Israel."
A wave of Jewish immigration on that scale would be vehemently opposed by the Palestinians, who fear many of the newcomers would be sent in to reinforce Jewish settlers living on Palestinian territory in the West Bank and Gaza, The Guardian said, reported Agence France-Presse (AFP).
"Israeli diplomats last night sought to play down the significance of Mr. Sharon's comments at a time when the relationship between Israelis and Palestinians is at its lowest point for decades," said the paper.
One Israeli diplomat said the remark was a generational one, reflecting the prime minister's pioneering Zionist background.
The paper quoted Sharon being adamant and focused in his plans saying, "We are not waiting here until [Palestinian president Yasser] Arafat decides to take steps against terror. First of all, we are taking steps against terror: steps that he could have avoided," attempting to justify Israel's internationally criticized policy of assassinating Palestinian political leaders.
"The other thing is that we are building. We are planning now to bring another one million Jews to Israel."
There are already five million Jews in the occupied territories, according to the paper.
The Guardian said that Afif Safieh, head of the Palestinian delegation in London, condemned the plan, saying, "Sharon believes what he says. It is a dangerous dream, a nightmare. He is a pyromaniac on a powder keg."
He added that such immigrants tended to be the most reactionary, trying to make up for their late arrival as Zionists. It was an especially inflammatory plan, given the millions of Palestinian refugees still waiting to return to their rightful homeland, Safieh said.
"Israel has attracted almost [one million] immigrants over the last 10 years, mainly from the former Soviet Union. It is difficult to see where Sharon will attract [one million] more, though he could squeeze some from the former Soviet Union or try such countries as Argentina, which has 500,000 Jews," said The Guardian.
The Guardian also reported that Sharon was unrepentant over Israeli policy of assassinating Palestinian activists alleged to be plotting bombings and shootings or having been behind such attacks.
"Some of them we managed to arrest, some of them are not any more with us. People don't like the word 'kill'. They were 'removed' from our society," he said.
While Sharon aims to bring more Jewish settlers into Palestine, Israeli public radio said Wednesday that hardline Jewish settlers in the flashpoint West Bank city of Al- Khalil (Hebron) are becoming more aggressive, both towards the majority Palestinians and the Israeli police investigating their depredations, AFP reported.
It quoted military and police sources as saying that settlers were increasingly throwing stones and spitting at Palestinians, as well as looting and burning their shops.
Among the worst offenders were children under 12, who cannot be prosecuted because of their age, the radio said.
Israeli police responding to complaints of Palestinians finding themselves showered with eggs, and jostled and insulted by the settlers, who live in an enclave in central Al-Khalil, closely guarded by the Israeli military.
