●本日の報道によると、FBIや警察筋は、民主党院内汚済む
トム・ダシュル上院議員のところ（ワシントンDC）とNBC（ニュー
ヨーク）に送られてきた“炭疽菌入りの封書”に「脅迫状」が
入っていたと発表したようですな。
●テレビ朝日のモーニングショーによれば、「脅迫状」の文面は

●仮にこれが原理主義的な（ほど熱心な）回教徒のしわざ
なら、「アッラーは偉大だ」などというオソレオオイ言葉を
こんなにぞんざいな手紙に書きつけるかな？ しかも英語で……
（ぞんざいだということは、FBIが公開した封筒前面の写真を
見れば一目瞭然。本稿の一番下にリンク先を貼ってあります。）
コーランだって、翻訳はタブーですからね。たとえば日本の
神風特攻隊が、「ロングライブ、ヒロヒトー！」とか叫んで米軍艦に
突っ込んでいく情景の奇妙さを、連想してしまうのです。それじゃ
まるで、ハリウッドの吹き替え映画じゃネエか。（笑）
……という疑問を感じながら、この手紙の写真を見たいものだ
と探してみたのですが、これほど重大な“証拠”がどこにも出てこない。（またまた笑）
●やはり脅迫状が入った“炭疽菌入り封書”がニューヨークポスト紙
というショーモナいタブロイド新聞にまで送られてきたというので、
ニューヨークの「東スポ」とも呼ぶべきこの新聞ならば、問題の「脅迫状」
とやらを大々と写真つきで載せて、与太記事を書き散らしているに
違いないと期待しつつ、ニューヨークポストにアクセスしたけど、肝心の
「脅迫状」の話は警察からの伝聞として書かれているだけ。
●だったら、情報源のFBIが発表しているのではないか、とFBIサイト
を探してみたが、封筒の宛名書き写真が掲載されているのみ……。
●というわけで、この「脅迫状」はなんともイカガわしい。私はとりあえず
この「脅迫状」の写真が発表されるまでは、デマだと見なすことにしま
した。
●ニューヨークやワシントンに配達された炭疽菌の素性についても、一時は「兵器用」だというデマが、警察方面から出ていたと報じられて
いましたけど〜。 なんでそういう嘘をつくんでしょうね。（藁

October 21, 2001 -- The New York Post received an anthrax-laced letter virtually identical to the letters sent to NBC anchor Tom Brokaw and Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, police and the FBI said last night.

やトム・ダシュル民主党に送られてきたものと事実上まったく同一の、炭疽菌が入れられた封書を受け取った――警察とＦＢＩは昨夜
（土曜の夜）そう発表した。】
The letter, found by FBI agents Friday, was postmarked in Trenton, N.J., on Sept. 18 - the same postmark and date as the Brokaw letter, which infected his assistant, Erin O'Connor.
【この封書はＦＢＩの捜査員が金曜日（19日）に見つけたもので、
９月18日付けのニュージャージー州トレントンの消印が押されて
いた。この消印と日付は、トム・ブロウコー宛てに遅られて助手の
エリン・オコーナー嬢が感染した封書と同一である。】
The letter to Daschle was also postmarked in Trenton, but on Oct. 8.

The Post letter was addressed to "Editor, New York Post," in block letters that slanted to the right - the same kind of writing as the other two letters.

Sources said it contained the same threat as in the other two letters, which had the phrases, "Death to America, Death to Israel. Allah is Great."

Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik and Barry Mawn, head of the FBI's New York office, said the letter had a small amount of a powdery substance that tested positive for the deadly germ.

The letter hadn't been opened when it was discovered, but FBI agents who handled it said it appeared to have powdery granules inside, sources said.

It was then tested at an Army infectious-diseases lab in Frederick, Md.

After O'Connor, Brokaw's assistant, tested positive for anthrax Oct. 12, officials of News Corp., which owns The Post, segregated letters that had been received in the mailroom.
Those that didn't have a return address and seemed suspicious were placed in a bag. Those with return addresses went on to their intended recipients.
On Friday, after tests revealed that Post Editorial Page assistant Johanna Huden had contracted the skin form of anthrax, the FBI asked to see the bag of segregated letters. Agents then found the Trenton letter.
Huden remembered getting a letter that was addressed in block capitals, but it was not the one found by the FBI.
She believes she slit that letter open, determined it was to the editor and placed it in a box that holds other letters to the editor.
The Post anthrax letter came to light as investigators found evidence of anthrax in a bundling machine that processes mail for the Longworth House Office Building.
More than 100 lawmakers, including Democratic leader Dick Gephardt of Missouri, have their offices there.
The new finding "is not unexpected," said Lt. Dan Nichols, a spokesman for the U.S. Capitol Police. "It is exactly why we have been performing sampling throughout the Capitol complex."
Mail for the House and Senate passes through a common postal facility before being separated and forwarded to each chamber's facilities.
Nichols said it was possible the newly discovered anthrax came from a letter that had touched the Daschle letter. But it was also possible that the anthrax came from another letter that hasn't surfaced, he said.
Meanwhile, local health officials in Washington said a man who works in the city's central mail-handling facility, which processed the Daschle letter, was hospitalized with symptoms that suggest anthrax.
City health director Ivan Walks would not identify the man, but said, "His clinical picture makes us suspicious."
