US ready to change second Iraq resolution

The US is open to modifying the second draft UN resolution on Iraq, the White House said today.

Ari Fleischer, the White House spokesman, indicated the US position after UN diplomats said that Britain was preparing an amendment that would extend the time for inspections. Mr Fleischer said: "Nothing is set in stone".

Tony Blair suggested today that he would be prepared to wage war on Iraq even if a number of United Nations powers vetoed a new resolution authorising military action.

Mr Blair promised that Iraq's oil would be placed out of the hands of Britain and the US following any war, to prove that the rich reserves were not the motive for conflict.

The United States ordered the expulsion yesterday of two UN-based Iraqi diplomats and has asked 60 countries to expel alleged Iraqi agents who could attack American interests overseas.
