Dr Amir Aziz, a famous surgeon arrested in Lahore in a joint operation by FBI and Pakistani intelligence operatives was Tuesday released in Lahore. Dr. Amir Aziz was arrested from his clinic in the countryside of Lahore, located close to Pakistan-India border some 40-day before. Prior to his arrest for at least three days, he was engaged in investigation of a joint pannel of Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Pakistani intelligence officials about his possible connections with al-Qaeda, network of Osama bin Laden and Mullah Mohammad Omar, chief of Taleban, former rulers in Afghanistan. Reportedly he was picked up with the charges of having linkages with Osama and Omar and also of helping al-Qaeda in making chemical arms.
Although Interior Minister, Moinuddin Haider denied that he was in the custody of the Americans but the police had denied of booking Dr. Amir Aziz, a respected doctor in Lahore who runs several charity clinics to treat the poors. The reports had also suggested that Amer Aziz was brought in Islamabad by the FBI agents for investigation in the last week of October. However at official level, Moin Haider did not confirm any crime of Amer.
The arrest of Dr. Amir Aziz had resulted countrywide protest demonstrations of the professionals including doctors, engineers and lawyers also students. They demanded an immediate release of the Dcotor and if committed any crime should have been dealt according to the law of Pakistan and not to be handed over to any other country (US). The family of Dr. Amir Aziz had also rejected the allegations of his any involvement in assisting al-Qaeda of making chemical arms. "He was a surgeon and medical doctors has no knowledge of chemical arms and I reject such allegations," his brother said.
Moin Haider in his statement on November 16 had said, "Dr. Amir Aziz may be released in the next two or three days." The family of Doctor Amir Aziz when contacted to tell about that who dropped him at his house, Dr. Aleena (sister) said, "we were inside our house when our brother came in. We don't know who had dropped him and also we are not in the position to tell any thing about it." She further said the family members did not ask Dr. Aziz that where he was and what happened to him. "We were happy that ultimately he returned home. Dr. Amer was tired and after keeping fast and offerring morning prayers go to sleep and we do not want to disturb him and will also not allowed anybody to disturb him."
Dr. Aziz has been set free three days after the new law anti-terrorism, promulgated by President General Pervez Musharraf, according to which the law enforcing agencies and also the police could keep any person in the custody for at least one year. The Lahore High Court on Wednesday last had directed the government to produce Dr. Amir Aziz before the court. In its second judgement, the honourable court had directed the authorities to set free Dr. Aziz or produce allegations against him in the court.
The dramatic release of Dr. Amir Aziz is believed a pressure mounted by the country's judiciary. It is also believed that he was innocent and having no connection with any terrorist group or extremists.
