再突入時のコロンビア号船内の最期の映像：このNASAにビデオには２月１日午前８時35分ごろから始まったコロンビア号船内の通常作業の様子が写っている。同機は当時、南太平洋から中部太平洋に至る高度50万フィートを飛行中だった。ビデオは同機が太平洋東部に至る８時48分まで続いている。

Video Shows Crew Before Shuttle Disintegrated

A video released today by NASA shows the Columbia astronauts marveling at the light show from superheated gases during re-entry -- the plasma that may have contributed to the destruction of the shuttle minutes later.

The 13 minutes of video, retrieved from tape discovered amid the wreckage near Palestine, Tex., on Feb. 6, appears at first viewing to be like any normal mission. The astronauts go about the business of preparing for re-entry, pulling on gloves and stowing gear, bantering with one another and hamming it up for the camera.

Only in the context of the disaster does the tape take on elements of suspense and tragedy, with the astronauts awed by the pyrotechnic display of the plasma flashing orange and white through the windows and brightening the shuttle cabin. It was a jet of the superheated gas, investigators believe, that somehow entered the body of the vehicle and brought it down.

NASA announced that it had the tape on Tuesday, and showed it to the astronauts' families before making it public today. Officials said the video did not add appreciably to the investigation.

But a second, unrelated video, prepared by the board investigating the shuttle accident, may shed more light on what happened, a Florida lawmaker said today. That video, which has not been released to the public, is a composite gathered from hundreds of still and video images from many sources showing the shuttle's last minutes of flight.

In the video rescued from the debris of the shuttle, the camera shows a re-entry procedure so routine that the mission specialists Dr. Kalpana Chawla and Cmdr. Laurel Salton Clark mug for the camera. The video begins from the vantage point of an onboard camera mounted above to the right of the pilot, Cmdr. William C. McCool, who later hands the camera to Commander Clark, who turns it to herself and raises her chin so that the camera can capture her broad smile over the high collar of her pressure suit. Views of the crowded cabin show the myriad switches, lights and computer screens, as well as some cables held in place with duct tape.

The mission specialists Lt. Col. Michael P. Anderson and Capt. David M. Brown and the payload specialist, Col. Ilan Ramon of the Israeli Air Force, do not appear on the video, since they were seated on Columbia's mid-deck.

The soundtrack captures the jargon-filled language of re-entry and light banter as well. At one point early in the video, Col. Rick D. Husband exclaims, "Oh, shoot!" as NASA informs him that the shuttle's automatic piloting computer system had been shut off. He explains that he had accidentally tapped the control with his leg and disengaged the system; he quickly and calmly turns it back on again.

As the plasma begins to glow, Commander Clark aims the camera upward through a window that on a car would be called a moon roof. Members of the crew express wonder at the sight.

"It's really neat," says Col. Husband, the shuttle's commander. "Looks like a blast furnace."

In the last moments of the video, cables that had appeared to float free are tugged downward as the Earth's gravity strengthens its grip on the craft.

The video begins at 8:35 a.m. Eastern time, when the shuttle was streaking over the south-central Pacific at 500,000 feet. It ends at 8:48, about the time that the orbiter was passing northeast of Hawaii at about 250,000 feet. That is five minutes before the shuttle crossed over the coast of California, and four minutes before the first problems with sensors were detected by the ground controllers.

The shuttle cabin video was recovered from a length of tape wound around the takeup reel of a shattered videocassette -- according to NASA, the remnants of the only one of some 250 tapes that went up with Columbia that has been found with recoverable footage. The tape's case was not found, the astronaut Scott Altman said. The tape cuts off when it does because the final 11 minutes of recorded video were burned, in effect acting as insulation for the surviving portion.

Commander Altman said today that the plasma display did not seem out of the ordinary. "All of the flashes and plasma events seen on the tape are typical of a normal nighttime entry," with no evidence that anything might be going wrong.

Seeing plasma for the first time is an awe-inspiring experience, said Senator Nelson, a Democrat who flew on the Columbia in 1986.
