Arab Groups Demand Armey Apology for Remarks About Palestinians

(CNSNews.com) - Several Arab-American groups have called on House Republican Leader Dick Armey (R-Texas) to apologize for remarks he made during a recent television interview about the Palestinian pursuit of statehood.
The groups contend that Armey called for an "ethnic cleansing" of the Palestinians, during an interview with Chris Matthews on MSNBC's Hardball program earlier this week.
According to a program transcript, Armey said, "I'm content to have Israel grab the entire West Bank."
Matthews then asked Armey, "Well, where do you put the Palestinian state, in Norway?"
Armey responded, "There are many Arab nations that have many hundreds of thousands of acres of land and soil and property and opportunity to create a Palestinian state."
When Matthews asked whether Armey believed "the Palestinians who are now living on the West Bank should get out of there?"
Armey replied, "Yes."
A spokesman for the Council of American-Islamic Relations called Armey's views "insane."
"It is beyond belief that Representative Armey would openly call for the ethnic cleansing of the entire Muslim and Christian Palestinian population, something that violates every norm of international law and human rights.
Even the most extreme Israelis are reluctant to publicly advocate such an insane policy," said CAIR Governmental Affairs Director Jason Erb.
The American Committee on Jerusalem was angered by Armey's comments as well.
"We're horrified. It's outrageous for somebody with Dick Armey's stature and standing in this country to be calling for something like the ethnic cleansing of a population --something that Americans have fought wars over ... in Bosnia and other places.
It is totally unacceptable," Rafi Dajani, spokesman for the American Committee on Jerusalem, said.
Dajani called on Armey to apologize.
"At the minimum he should apologize or at the very least clarify his remarks in a way that would negate what he said.
While he may not have used the actual words 'ethnic cleansing,' the transfer of a population against its will out of the land that it lives on is ethnic cleansing," said Dajani.
Dajani added, "It would have to be a forcible transfer, which makes it ethnic cleansing without him actually having said it."
The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee sent word out to its members to call Armey's office and demand that he apologize, according to spokesman Hussein Ibish.
"On Hardball, he was given repeated opportunities by Chris Matthews to clarify that he didn't intend to call for the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians and he wouldn't do it," said Ibish.
Armey's comments were hostile, reflecting his true beliefs about the Palestinians, Ibish said.
"He believed it rather passionately at the time. It was not a slip of the tongue. He has embraced the interests of Israel as the only and over-riding good in this situation, " said Ibish.
Armey Thursday said his comments on "Hardball" do not reflect his overall views about the Palestinian situation.
"In my exchange with Chris Matthews, I left the impression that I believe peaceful Palestinian civilians should be forcibly expelled from the West Bank and Gaza Strip. This does not reflect my views.
I was merely trying to convey my strong belief that Israel should yield no further territory until its security is assured and that the individuals who support terrorist acts may properly be exiled from the area," said Armey in a statement on Capitol Hill.
"Let me be clear. Israel is fighting the same war on terrorism that we are fighting. I reaffirm my support for their right to defend themselves and secure their peace and security," Armey concluded.
