What's the Problem? (Ee ja nai ka) (Detail)
(Kyoto National Museum)
Ee ja nai ka (What's the Problem?) was a kind of people's uprising that was popular in Western Japan in 1867. The townspeople would dress up in costumes, often of the opposite sex, and take to the streets wildly dancing and singing. Ee ja nai ka incidents were incited in Kyoto in October and November of 1867, likely abetted by groups trying to put down the shogunate. Ryoma's assassination on November 15th of that year occurred during this kind of commotion.
