'Mona Lisa' of Coins Fetches $7.6 Million Wed Jul 31,12:10 PM ET
NEW YORK (Reuters) - The price of gold just went up.
The so-called Mona Lisa of gold coins, a $20 piece which weighs .96 troy ounces, on Tuesday went to an anonymous buyer, who bid $6.6 million for the coin, and paid a 15 percent premium and $20 face value for a total of $7.59 million.
The money is payable to the U.S. Treasurer.
Sotheby's and Stack's, the oldest and largest U.S. coin dealer, handled the sale on behalf of the U.S. Mint, which had to give permission for the coin to be privately owned.
The bidding, which started at $2.5 million, was brisk and lasted about 10 minutes in Sotheby's crowded showroom on Manhattan's East Side.
The initial bid at the auction presided over by Sotheby's Vice Chairman David Redden came from Barry Goldwater Jr., son of the late Arizona Senator.
Earlier, several hundred well-heeled attendees milled around eager for a look at the legendary coin, which was displayed in a glass case flanked by two uniformed guards.
At the close, U.S. Mint Director Henrietta Holsman Fore acknowledged receipt of the coin in a formal ceremony.
"I have received the $20 due to the U.S. government" she said, pronouncing the only lawfully issued 1933 gold coin legal tender.
"It is a historic first," she said.
More recently, the coin was moved from a government gold bullion depository at the World Trade Center to Fort Knox, Kentucky, about two months before the Sept. 11 attack that destroyed New York's landmark twin towers, said Harvey G. Stack, a partner at Stack's, in a telephone interview.
