ポンペイオ国務長官が、自分がCIA長官時代に、CIAは嘘とつき、誤魔化し、盗み取ったと自慢しています。 ‘Glory of American experiment’: What did Pompeo mean by that? 　United States Secretary of State and former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) director (2017 - 2018), Mike Pompeo, admitted to an audience from Texas A&M University on April 15, that the agency especially trains employees to “lie, cheat and steal.” 　米国の国務長官であり、また前CIA長官のマイク・ポンペイオが、4月15日、テキサスのA&M大学の聴衆に対して、CIAは職員に、嘘をつき、誤魔化し、盗み取ることを訓練していたと認めた。 　 　“When I was a cadet, what’s the cadet motto at West Point? You will not lie, cheat, or steal or tolerate those who do. I was the CIA director. We lied, we cheated, we stole. We had entire training courses. It reminds you of the glory of the American experiment,” Pompeo boasted as the audience laughed and celebrated the statement. 　私が士官候補生であったころ、ウェストポイント（陸軍士官学校）のモットーは何だったか？　嘘をつかない、誤魔化さない、盗まない、そして、そのようなことをする者を許さない、と。私は、CIAの長官をしていたが、そのときに我々は、嘘をつき、誤魔化し、盗み取った。そうした訓練コースがあり、皆さんは、かつてのアメリカの栄光を思い出すだろう。そうポンペイオは自慢して、聴衆の笑いを誘った。 　It was a rather honest yet disconcerting thing to say, three days after (April 12) a new batch of declassified information from the U.S. government shows the extent of the 1970s ‘Operation Condor,’ in which South American dictators systematically tortured and killed dissidents in the region. 　米国政府は4月12日に、1970年代のコンドル作戦についての秘密情報を公開したが、それによれば南米の独裁者たちが地域の不平不満分子を制度的に拷問したり殺害したとされている。 　An estimated 60,000 people were killed by the Latin American states in the clandestine operation, 30,000 in Argentina alone. Another 30,000 were disappeared and 400,000 imprisoned during the Operation. It is now known that the CIA was a guiding hand throughout the whole process, by training and helping military and civilian personnel. 　 　例えば、アルゼンチンだけでも秘密作戦で3万人、南米全体で6万人が殺されている。さらに3万人が行方不明、40万人が投獄された。そして、今やCIAがそれらの手引きをしたことが知られている。 　“Diplomacy and military strength go hand in hand. They are indeed intimately related. Each relies on the other,” Pompeo also admitted during the conference called “Why Diplomacy Matters.” 　外交と軍事的な強さは車の両輪だ。両者は相関関係にある。ポンペイオは、何故外交が重要なのかということを認めた。 　Covert operations, ousting democratically elected governments, inciting revolts and supporting transnational companies are run of the mill actions for the CIA, all justified as part of the fight against those who question U.S.’ interests.
