In a post on Facebook FB +2.80%, Mark Zuckerberg announced that he and his wife Priscilla Chan have a new baby girl named Max. Along with that joyful news, Zuckerberg said he plans to give away 99% of his Facebook stock over the course of his life. That is a gift currently worth $45 billion. Facebook CEO Zuckerberg is currently the 7th richest person in the world, according to Forbes’ Real Time Billionaires ranking, with a net worth estimated at $46.8 billion. Zuckerberg made his stock giveaway promise official in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The filing says: “On December 1, 2015, our Founder, Chairman and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, announced that, during his lifetime, he will gift or otherwise direct substantially all of his shares of Facebook stock, or the net after-tax proceeds from sales of such shares, to further the mission of advancing human potential and promoting equality by means of philanthropic, public advocacy, and other activities for the public good. For this purpose, Mr. Zuckerberg has established a new entity, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, LLC, and he will control the voting and disposition of any shares held by such entity. He has informed us that he plans to sell or gift no more than $1 billion of Facebook stock each year for the next three years and that he intends to retain his majority voting position in our stock for the foreseeable future. In a long, detailed letter to their newborn daughter posted on his Facebook page, Zuckerberg spells out what the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative will do: As you begin the next generation of the Chan Zuckerberg family, we also begin the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative to join people across the world to advance human potential and promote equality for all children in the next generation. Our initial areas of focus will be personalized learning, curing disease, connecting people and building strong communities. The letter to their daughter goes into detail about the two goals shaping Zuckerberg and Chan’s giving philosophy. They pose some questions about what advancing human potential and promoting equality means, including: “Can our generation eliminate poverty and hunger?” Recommended by Forbes Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg & More Than 20 Other Billionaires Launch Coalition... In December 2010, Zuckerberg joined the Giving Pledge, making it clear that he planned to give away at least half of his net worth. Today he and his wife have upped the ante. Zuckerberg explained in his letter that more details will come in due time. We’ll share more details in the coming months once we settle into our new family rhythm and return from our maternity and paternity leaves. We understand you’ll have many questions about why and how we’re doing this. Mike Bloomberg, an active philanthropist and the billionaire CEO of Bloomberg LP, issued a statement and a challenge to others in Silicon Valley in response to Zuckerberg’s letter: “My hat’s off to Mark for making a decision he’ll never regret and making a difference he’ll forever be remembered for. Devoting his wealth to philanthropy at such an young age will not only benefit people from around the world for decades to come, it will also set an example for everyone in his generation who has the means to give. The traditional approach to giving – leaving it to old age or death – is falling by the wayside, as it should. Mark’s decision shows that when it comes to philanthropy, 30 is the new 70. I share many of Mark’s philanthropic interests, especially around education and innovation, and his focus on long-term ideas and research will help create economic opportunities and promote social equality for generations to come. The only question now is: How many of his peers in Silicon Valley and beyond will join him?” Follow me on Twitter TWTR +0.00% at @KerryDolan Editor’s note: This post was updated at shortly before 6pm ET on Dec. 1 to include a comment from Mike Bloomberg. 1Comment on this story http://www.forbes.com/sites/kerryadolan/2015/12/01/mark-zuckerberg-announces-birth-of-baby-girl-plan-to-donate-99-of-his-facebook-stock/ Mark Zuckerberg welcomes daughter to the world with a Facebook note By Colin Lecher on December 1, 2015 04:23 pm @colinlecher Share on Facebook Tweet Share Pin In an announcement posted to Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan have announced the birth of their daughter, Max. "Your mother and I don't yet have the words to describe the hope you give us for the future," the post, structured as a letter from the couple, begins. "Your new life is full of promise, and we hope you will be happy and healthy so you can explore it fully. You've already given us a reason to reflect on the world we hope you live in." The post — a Facebook note — describes the changes that the couple hopes to see for their daughter. "Like all parents, we want you to grow up in a world better than ours today," the note reads. To do that, the note says, will require advances in health, education, technology, and equality. The couple calls for "long term investments over 25, 50 or even 100 years," including democratizing internet access.
As part of the announcement, Zuckerberg and Chan also pledged to give 99 percent of their Facebook shares to charity during their lives, through a new organization called the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. At about $45 billion today, it's likely to be one of the biggest charitable pledges in history. "It's been 37 weeks so I think it's time for her to come out," Zuckerberg joked in a video announcing the initiative, recorded before the birth and posted today. Zuckerberg, last month, announced that he would be taking two months off for paternity leave.
