Italian judges arrested in anti-mafia move

Tax police in Naples have arrested 47 people - including 16 judges - and seized assets said to be worth over E1bn in an anti-mafia operation allegedly exposing the growing penetration by organised crime of big business and the Italian state.
Operation Bad Metal, launched before dawn on Monday, targeted the Ragosta group which reports an annual turnover of E200m and has four divisions active across Italy focused on property, hotels, steel production and food.
Fedele Ragosta, chairman and founder, was among those arrested, along with his two brothers and their wives. They were accused of being the main business hub for the Fabbrocino clan of the Naples mafia known as the Camorra. Giuseppe Ragosta, father of the three brothers, was said to have been the victim of a suspected gangland killing in the 1990s.
Prosecutors said 16 tax judges based in the province of Naples were arrested on suspicion of being involved in a “vast web of corruption” involving an “illicit trade of court verdicts” which had inflicted “incalculable damage” on the state tax collection agency. One of the judges, Anna Maria D’Ambrosio, was also said by prosecutors to have worked as an accountant for the Ragosta group. Eight other officials were also arrested.
