ADEN, Yemen (AFP) – Al-Qaeda militants killed 10 soldiers on Friday in separate ambushes on two military convoys in the restive southern province of Abyan, Yemeni officials said.
"We were hit today in an Al-Qaeda ambush which resulted in the killing of five soldiers and two others being wounded," a security official who requested anonymity told AFP of the first attack.
But another security official later revised the death toll to nine soldiers.
The militants used rocket-propelled grenades and machine guns in the ambush in the area of Ameen, southwest of the town of Loder, the officials said, adding that two military vehicles were burned.
Loder health department chief Mostafa Ahmed confirmed to AFP that the bodies of five soldiers were taken to a hospital morgue. A civilian passer-by was wounded, he added.
And a medical official in Al-Bayda province, near Abyan, said the bodies of four other soldiers killed in the same ambush were taken to a hospital in his area.
The army vehicles had been escorting a lorry carrying food supplies to military bases in the area. Two water tanks were also destroyed.
Army units were hunting for the gunmen who are believed to number around 15, an official told AFP.
Meanwhile, one soldier was killed and the leader of army Brigade 111 in Abyan, Mohsen al-Juzaili, was wounded in an Al-Qaeda ambush which targeted a convoy of officials heading to the area of the earlier attack, officials said.
Awad al-Nukhy, the head of the local authority in Loder who survived the new ambush, told AFP that four soldiers were wounded in addition to Juzaili when the convoy came under fire south of Loder.
He said the group was on its way out of an army base heading to Ameen when the assailants struck.
A security official said one of the wounded soldiers died later in hospital. A medical official in Loder said that a woman was also brought in with serious injuries.
Abyan and adjacent Shabwa province have become major fields of operation for Al-Qaeda as the central government in Sanaa struggles to impose its control on the region's heavily armed tribes.
The United States last month called on Yemen to step up its fight against Al-Qaeda, one year after a botched attempt to blow up a US passenger plane.
Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula has been accused of being behind the attempted 2009 Christmas Day attack, allegedly carried out by a young Nigerian who had reportedly studied in Yemen.
In addition to its struggle against the growing presence of Al-Qaeda in the south, Sanaa is also grappling with an increasingly violent southern opposition.
Many southerners complain of discrimination in the government's allocation of resources to their part of the country, which was independent from the 1967 British withdrawal from Aden until uniting with the north in 1990.
The south seceded in 1994, sparking a short-lived civil war that ended with it being overrun by northern troops.
