Police detain anti-Putin protesters（REUTERS）

May 31 - Russia police detain 33 anti-Putin protestors who demand Putin resignation.

Russian riot police detained 33 opposition demonstrators as they attempted to stage a protest demanding Prime Minister Vladimir Putin resign for his handling of the economic crisis.

Russia is entering the worst recession in at least a decade and unemployment has soared to 7.7 million, but public expressions of discontent are still rare.

There was a large police presence at Moscow central Triumfalnaya Square where several opposition groups had attempted to gather for the unsanctioned protest "Russia without Putin".

As protesters unfurled banners calling for Putin to quit office, Russian riot police moved in and made the arrests.

Other protesters were held as they arrived from a nearby metro station to attend the rally. The area was sealed off by the police and trucks with police in riot gear and interior troops were parked on nearby streets.
