July 7: Tmax Window, a new Korean PC OS, will be introduced
Jun 15, 2009 22:31
From today, TmaxSoft has begun to promote "TmaxDay2009" which will be its biggest event ever. This local company in Korea is about to introduce a new PC OS called Tmax Window. (Teaser site.)
Tmax Window is a new type of PC OS and it's not based on Linux or anything else. I'm not too sure about the software but that's what the company is promoting now. I will have a clearer picture July 7.
TmaxSoft is planning to get into the local PC OS market which has been dominated by MS Windows. It will take a while to make enough noise for people to begin to notice Tmax Window. The company needs to prove that its OS is stable enough to use and has great compatibility with MS Windows as it has promoted. If TmaxSoft can show us that it really has the potential in some categories such as MIDs, PMPs and mobile devices which require less application usage compared with desktop PC and laptops, I'm sure the Korean OS will create a huge noise since the MS Windows license is one of the major concerns for the small companies developing MIDs and PMPs here in Korea. They would like to put Linux in their MIDs, but it brings along problems such as like support for ActiveX for Web surfing and has very limited Korean applications available for the OS. Plus, Linux is difficult for the average consumer to use compared with MS Windows.
Let's see how TmaxSoft can prove what they claim about compatibility with MS Windows. I think the key success for their OS lies in supporting ActiveX. Koreans want to have something like the Crunchpad or Internet Tablet with a light, customized OS and at a smaller price tag. But ActiveX keeps getting in the way as it is needed for full Internet browsing in the country. So I think supporting ActiveX will be a smart move to survive in categories which now mostly use Linux with its limited Internet usability.
Also, TmaxSoft has said it is going to launch its new PC OS together with its own Office software called Tmax Office and a Web browser called Tmax Scoutor. It is good to have its own software which can be tested on its OS for stability. But I'm not too sure if this is the right way to go for the company since Microsoft has been facing various problems lately by packaging its applications on MS Windows OS.
It is exciting to see how TmaxSoft is going to introduce this new PC OS called Tmax Window come July 7. I am just concerned about the use of the word "Window" since most people will identify it with MS Windows. Maybe what TmaxSoft needs is to find another choice of name for its unique PC OS before releasing it.
