Russia should not fear the adoption of Ukraine and
Georgia into NATO - Brzezinski
Washington- The process of NATO's expansion into
Ukraine and Georgia goes hand in hand with the
expansion of the European Union, as NATO and the EU
are an evolving Euro-Atlantic community, believes
former National Security Adviser to the U.S.
President, political scientist Zbigniew Brzezinski.
"This union is no longer directed against Moscow and
the Soviet Union. The countries in question are making
a conscious decision to become part of the European
Union and taking a purposeful decision to participate
in larger security structures, to which EU countries
also belong," Brzezinski said in an interview with
Interfax.
In his opinion, "this opposition, as a perception of
hostile action" reflects a "nostalgia for continuing
imperial domination over these countries by the
Kremlin."
If Moscow would not perceive this as a hostile act,
"but as a normal evolution of a larger Euro-Atlantic
community, then it would be easier in future to create
a structure that would be mutually beneficial to the
EU and Russia and NATO and Russia", believes the
professor.
"In terms of a long-term perspective, it would be
highly desirable. But it is less likely when Russia is
using a policy of humiliation and even threats to
prevent the aspirations of Georgia and Ukraine to join
the EU and NATO," Brzezinski said.
According to Brzezinski, Georgia and Ukraine should
join NATO "when they are ready to join."
"I think none of these countries are yet ready to
join. But I do not believe that the door should be
closed to their membership," Brzezinski said.
In his view, "it is perfectly normal to prepare
themselves through joint collaboration with NATO for
possible future membership in this organization."
"The plan for membership of these countries in NATO
today is the only issue submitted for consideration,
but it has not yet been decided.
"But to deny those countries the right to participate
in plans for NATO membership is a decision that is
negative. It seems to me it is not justified," the
political scientist concluded.
