Thirteen of the dead and 22 of the wounded were police officers, according to the Ministry of Information. CNN has confirmed that Abu Mustapha Ansari, the Basra leader of the followers of Ahmed al-Hasani al-Yamani, a messianic cult, was among those killed. Iraqi state TV said a curfew has been imposed in both Basra and Nasiriya and security forces are in control of the situation. Police in Basra said many people have been detained and that police were conducting raids. The Iraqi government said it does not believe the incidents in the cities are linked. And government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh told CNN the Basra attackers were not believed to be from the Soldiers of Heaven group -- as was earlier reported by Iraqi state TV -- but followers of Ahmed al-Hasani al-Yamani. The Shiite cult leader claims to have a connection to the Imam al-Mehdi. The group, however, is not as strong nor as organized as the Soldiers of Heaven, al-Dabbagh said. Meanwhile, in northwestern Baghdad, gunmen Friday evening fired on a mosque where thousands of Shiite pilgrims -- including Iraq's National Security Adviser, Mowaffaq al-Rubaie -- were commemorating the Shiite festival of Ashura. Al-Rubaie told CNN that Iraqi security forces quickly took control of the situation and "managed to control them (the gunmen) and apprehend them." There were no reports of injuries. In Kirkuk Saturday, a bomb hidden under a pile of trash exploded near Shiites walking in an Ashura commemoration, killing at least two people and wounding seven others, according to police. The blast happened at about 10 a.m. in al-Wahda neighborhood in southwestern Kirkuk, which is an oil-rich city about 240 km (150 miles) north of Baghdad. A Basra police official told CNN that a "terrorist group" attacked Shiite pilgrims in the city of Basra, and that led to fighting with police. Without giving names, he confirmed that the group's leader and several of its members were killed, as was a senior Basra police commander. The British Defense Ministry said Iraqi security forces are dealing with the incidents in Basra and have the situation under control. While Britain, whose troops are based in southern Iraq, are monitoring events, they are not involved at present. Mohammed al-Obaidi, head of the Basra Governing Council, told CNN that the situation in Basra is calm now, Ashura commemorations are under way and security forces are in control. He said there are casualties among police and attackers. Later, Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's office issued a statement saying, "Our security and military forces were able to impose full control and restore calm to the provinces of Basra and Nasiriya" and the attackers had been arrested. "Our security forces were able to crack down a ... network and arrest a big number of its members, who were planning to kill the religious scholars in Najaf and Karbala," al-Maliki's office said. "What happened in Basra and Nasiriya was part of a suspected criminal plan." Al-Dabbagh said the leader of the Basra group, known as Abu Mustapha al-Ansari, was killed along with a number of his followers. No official casualty numbers were released, but al-Dabbagh said there were police casualties in both cities, especially Nasiriya, where the head of police intelligence was killed. "Misguided and perverse groups tried to take advantage of the atmosphere of forgiveness on this holy occasion. ... These groups are exploiting religion and are promoting this perverse and misguided cult through violence," al-Dabbagh said. Pilgrims are in Iraq to commemorate the Shiite festival of Ashura, which has frequently been connected with sectarian violence. Authorities have imposed stiff security measures this week, including vehicle bans. Last year the Soldiers of Heaven battled Iraqi and U.S. forces in Najaf. The group was bent on an assault on the Imam Ali Shrine and senior Shiite clerics. Ashura reverberates in the south, Iraq's Shiite heartland, which includes Basra, Nasiriya, Najaf, and Karbala. Authorities in Basra said Ashura commemorations in the Shiite city were not affected by the clashes and denied initial reports that Mehdi Army elements were involved in the fighting in Basra. The Mehdi Army, the militia of grass-roots Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr and his political movement, has battled in the past with Iraqi security forces, many of whom are affiliated with the militia of the rival Supreme Islamic Council of Iraq. A Shiite pilgrimage in Karbala in August had been canceled after clashes there. "Rogue militia elements," a reference to supporters of the Mehdi Army, and Iraq security forces battled. More than 50 people died in Karbala and in other areas, including Baghdad where the fighting spread. After that spasm of violence, al-Sadr suspended the operations for six months of the Mehdi Army, a declaration that many observers believe led to a drop in attacks across Iraq. During the holy period, faithful Shiites mourn the death of Imam Hussein, the grandson of Prophet Mohammed and the third imam of Shiite Islam. Hussein died in battle in the 7th century.
