Japan Establishes Hideyo Noguchi Prize
July 26, 2006
Japan has established a 100m Yen prize -- in the name of Dr. Hideyo Noguchi -- to be awarded every five years for contributions to the fight against disease in Africa. Dr. Noguchi joined the Rockefeller Institute in 1904. He researched diseases until his death from yellow fever in 1928.
In a press release issued today, a satement from the Rockefeller Foundation said:
「The Foundation welcomes the creation of the Noguchi Prize by the Japanese Government. Dr. Hideyo Noguchi contributed greatly to the study of yellow fever, and gave his life to the ultimately-successful cause of yellow fever's eradication from much of the world while in the service the Foundation and the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research. We honor his memory, and that of the other scientists who were similarly lost...」
Dr. Noguchi's interest in medicine began after an operation restored the use of his left hand. which had been badly burned when he was a child. He managed to apprentice himself to the surgeon who had helped him and, after years of dedicated study, became a doctor himself at only 20.
In 1900, Dr. Noguchi migrated to the U.S. where he secured a research position with Dr. Simon Flexner at the University of Pennsylvania. (Dr. Flexner would also become a central figure in The Rockefeller Foundation's work in Public Health.)
Hideyo Noguchi: in bronze, on 1000 Yen note, in the lab
Dr. Noguchi joined the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research in 1904, beginning a long and productive relationship. He concentrated his efforts on a variety of areas including snake venoms, syphilis and particularly yellow fever. On behalf of the Foundation, his research took him to South and Central America and then to Africa, where he contracted the disease he was engaged in curing.
Revered in the years since his death, especially in his home country, Dr. Noguchi’s portrait has appeared on the 1000 Yen note since 2004.
