マケイン氏　女性ロビイストと『不適切な関係』か

　【ワシントン＝小栗康之】米大統領選挙の共和党指名候補獲得を確実にしているマケイン上院議員（７１）に対し、女性ロビイスト（４０）と不適切な関係にあったとの疑惑が二十日、浮上した。二十一日付の米紙ニューヨーク・タイムズ（電子版）が報じた。事実とすれば、今後の選挙戦で不利な材料になる。

　同紙などによると、この女性は通信事業関係のロビイストのビッキー・アイゼマン氏。マケイン氏が最初の大統領選出馬を目指していた一九九九年当時、マケイン氏の事務所に頻繁に出入りし、資金集めパーティーなどにも出席していた。

　当時、マケイン氏は上院商業委員会委員長で、アイゼマン氏の顧客になんらかの便宜を図った可能性もあるという。

　二人の親密な関係が明るみに出れば、選挙戦や政治生命への打撃になると危ぶんだマケイン氏の周辺は女性に同氏に近づかないよう求め、その後、関係は薄れた。

　同紙に対し、マケイン氏は「二人の関係はロマンチックなものではなかったし、世間の信用を裏切るようなことはしていない」と交際を強く否定した。マケイン氏は今回の選挙でロビイストの影響力が強い政治の打破を打ち出している。

　疑惑が深まれば、マケイン氏の指名獲得に対し、なお反発している保守派が批判を強める可能性がある。

WASHINGTON — Early in Senator John McCain’s first run for the White House eight years ago, waves of anxiety swept through his small circle of advisers.

A female lobbyist had been turning up with him at fund-raisers, visiting his offices and accompanying him on a client’s corporate jet. Convinced the relationship had become romantic, some of his top advisers intervened to protect the candidate from himself — instructing staff members to block the woman’s access, privately warning her away and repeatedly confronting him, several people involved in the campaign said on the condition of anonymity.

When news organizations reported that Mr. McCain had written letters to government regulators on behalf of the lobbyist’s client, the former campaign associates said, some aides feared for a time that attention would fall on her involvement.

Mr. McCain, 71, and the lobbyist, Vicki Iseman, 40, both say they never had a romantic relationship. But to his advisers, even the appearance of a close bond with a lobbyist whose clients often had business before the Senate committee Mr. McCain led threatened the story of redemption and rectitude that defined his political identity.
