クルーグマン教授にノーベル賞を受ける資格がある理由

このラインは凄く説得力があるなあ。
いっつもオレがオレがオレがオレが言わなきゃ誰が言う！
と口角泡飛ばすババチイ様子を幻視させる文章を書くブロガアがいますね。
適当に言われた通り書いている「しったか」もキモイのですが、こういう輩もかなりキモイ。
勘違いが加味されているから「かなりキモイ」と言えるでしょう。
「必死だな」という言葉には二つニュアンスがあるような気がしますよ。
一般的な後ろに（プゲラとつくバージョンと、思いっ切り引いた挙句に、腹の底からわきあがり、食道を逆流してオエっと出てきた「ひ、ひっしだな、おまえ」というバージョン。
口角泡組には、後者がもよおされます。
誰とは言わないけど。

The usual response to the announcement of the Nobel memorial prize winner is “who?”. Not on Monday. Paul Krugman, a columnist for The New York Times, is (along with the late Milton Friedman) the most recognisable man ever to receive the honour. He was awarded his prize “for his analysis of trade patterns and location of economic activity”; he could with equal justice have been awarded it for reminding the world that rigorous economic ideas matter.
ノーベル賞受賞者が発表された時、普通は「だれそれ？」である。
しかし月曜日の発表は違った。
NYT紙のコラムニスト、ポール・クルーグマン。
彼は（故ミルトン・フリードマンと並んで）最も有名なノーベル賞受賞者だ。
彼は「貿易パターンと経済活動場所の分析」を評価されてノーベル賞を授与された。
活発な経済的アイデアが大事だ、ということを世界に思い出させた、という理由も、同じ位正当だったかもしれない。
The award itself is no surprise: the Nobel has long seemed destined to land eventually in Mr Krugman’s lap. Yet eyebrows will be raised both by the timing and by the fact that Mr Krugman is the sole recipient of the award.
賞そのものは驚きではない。
ノーベル賞は前々から、いつかはクルーグマン氏に贈られる運命のようだった。
しかし、クルーグマン氏が単独でノーベル賞の受賞者となった、タイミングとその事実の両方が驚きだった。
The timing is provocative, three weeks before the US presidential election, because Mr Krugman has been a trenchant and influential critic both of the Bush administration and of John McCain. Then there is the Nobel committeeﾕs decision not to split the prize ﾐ as is common ﾐ with economists whose work is related. Men such as Avinash Dixit made Mr Krugmanﾕs research possible. Yet while Paul Krugmanﾕs talents as a theorist are shared by a handful of his peers, his gifts as a communicator are not. It seems that the Nobel committee felt that Mr Krugmanﾕs role as a public intellectual was a stepping stone to the prize, not a stumbling block.
このタイミングは挑発的だ。

というのも、クルーグマン氏は、ブッシュ政権とジョン・マケインの両方をボロクソに批判してきたのだ。
そこでノーベル賞委員会が、いつものように関連研究をしているエコノミストで賞を分け合うようにしない、と決断したわけで…。
アヴィナッシュ・ディキシットのような人物が、クルーグマン氏の研究を可能にしたのだ。
が、ポール・クルーグマンの理論家としての才能を共有する同業者も何人か存在するものの、彼のコミュニケーターとしての天賦の才は比類ないものだ。
ノーベル賞委員会は、クルーグマン氏のパブリック・インテリという役割を、この賞への障害ではなく足がかりと感じたようだ。
That is no bad thing. As the world is once again realising, economics matters. Mr Krugman has always been an exemplar of clear economic thinking and a champion of data over anecdote. He was a perceptive analyst of the Asian crisis and has been a sharp, witty defender of globalisation. His readers were warned in good time to beware of the dotcom craze and the housing bubble, learning about the economy through parables about a baby-sitting circle, a gold rush or a hot-dog manufacturer.
それは悪いことではない。
世界が再び気付いているように、エコノミストは大事なのだ。
クルーグマン氏は常に、明確な経済的施行の模範となってきたし、論よりデータ派だった。
彼はアジア危機への理解が深いアナリストであり、シャープでウィットに富んだグローバライゼーションの擁護者だ。
彼の支持者は、ドットコム祭と住宅祭に気を付けろ、と十分な余裕を以って警告され、ベビーシッターのサークル、ゴールドラッシュ、そしてホットドッグ・メーカーのたとえ話を通じて、経済を学んだ。
Few economists will deny that Mr Krugman’s research deserves this prize, but some regret the fact that he is now far more likely to demolish a Republican campaign tactic than to build an insightful economic model.
クルーグマン氏のリサーチがノーベル賞受賞に値する、ということを否定するエコノミストは殆どいないだろう。
しかし、彼が今や、洞察力に富んだ経済モデルを築き上げるよりも、共和党の選挙運動戦術を粉砕する確率がかなり高まってしまったことを、悔やむ者もいるかもしれない。
There is truth in that. While his criticisms of the Bush administration’s woeful policies have tended to ring all too true, his rage can diminish the persuasiveness of his argument. In any case, many journalists can shoot the fish in that particular barrel, but only one economist can pen a whimsical “theory of interstellar trade”. Even when the polemicist is at the top of his game, the witty populariser of economic logic is occasionally missed.
それも本当だ。
ブッシュ政権のアホな政策に対する彼の批判は全くご尤もなのだが、彼の怒りが説得力を殺いでしまうかもしれない。
何にせよ、そのエリアを攻撃出来るジャーナリストは沢山いる。
しかし、気まぐれな「惑星間貿易論」を書き記せるエコノミストは、一人しかいないのだ。
論客が絶好調の時ですら、このウィットに富んだ経済理論伝道者は時々惜しまれている。
It is not too late for Paul Krugman to return to what he does best: explaining how the economy works, why it matters, and what wrong-headed policies can do to it. In fact, that change may soon come. If so, it will not be because of the Nobel prize, but because the Republicans no longer hold the White House. An Obama presidency might persuade Mr Krugman that his services on the political front line are no longer so urgently needed.
手遅れではない。
ポール・クルーグマンは未だ、最も得意とするところへ立ち戻ることは出来る。
経済の仕組を説明し、どうしてそれが大事なのかを説明し、そしてとっちらかった政策が何をしでかしかねないかを説明出来る。
実は、その変化はもう直ぐかもしれない。
そうだとすれば、それはノーベル賞のせいではなく、共和党がホワイトハウスから追い出されるからだろう。
オバマ政権は、彼の政治的サービスはもう前ほど必要じゃないから、とクルーグマン氏に言えるかもしれないのだから。
Slogans and polemics matter. So, too, do models and data. Paul Krugman is a master of them all. We congratulate him.
スローガンや論争術は大事なのだ。
そして、モデルやデータも大事なのである。
ポール・クルーグマンは、その全てに秀でている。
心からおめでとうの言葉を贈る。
